See selections from Berenice Abbott’s monumental photography project Changing New York that capture the rapid transformation of New York City in the 1930s. Explore modern skyscrapers, harbors, highways, city squares, neighborhoods, storefronts, and hand-painted signs that capture the essence of a specific time and place. Abbott’s photographs changed the course of photography in the twentieth century and are a reminder of the excitement and joy ignited when seeing the world anew.Berenice Abbott, "Metropolitan Life Building, New York," ca. 1935. The Visible Vaults recreates part of The San Diego Museum of Art’s most carefully guarded area, a place that is invisible to most visitors—the vaults—where the thousands of works of art in our collection are stored. See this insider’s look at hidden masterpieces, where visitors are invited to open drawers, peek into virtual storerooms, and take the time to sketch and observe some of the great treasures of the collection.
