Time is necessary to estimate any work of art. Space is needed to show any work of
art.... Freedom is necessary for the development of all art. Freedom to create and
freedom to show.
-George Bellows, in a letter to The Boston Globe
Although Bellows himself was frequently a juror, he did not necessarily agree with the
jury system for judging works of art. Here he pokes fun at the process in which he often
participated. Bellows, Robert Henri, and Childe Hassam sit in the audience to the
right watching the works as they are presented. At the far left, a large canvas coming
up before the judges bears Bellows' name, address, and a cartoon of his balding
head.
