George Bellows' skillful meditations on spectacle and crowds extended to scenes derived from devotional gatherings of organized religion. Although in most cases Bellows looked skeptically upon the evangelistic motivations of the preachers, he was fascinated by the emotional response these charismatic individuals could provoke from the crowd.
