Early morning factory district, New York. The first lithograph made by George Bellows.
From an early drawing.
-George Bellows
George Bellows was a good friend of the artist Robert Henri who, along with fellow
artists, formed a group called "The Eight," also known as the "Ashcan School" who
became known for their direct, and often gritty urban realism. Although Bellows was
not an official member of the group, this lithograph illustrates how he embraced the
ideas of Henri and others in a search for a realistic American style. These dogs,
scavanging for food in an alley near where Bellows lived (in the West Fifties) show
an actual, if not particularly pretty, side of everyday life in New York City.
