Bellows did two versions of this lithograph. In this, the earlier of the two, he focused his attention on the people gathered in the foreground. The "dark" in the title of this work does not refer to a time of day but rather to the backdrop of trees, almost indistinguishable in this lithograph but clearly discernible in a later variant.
