Urban Life
George Bellows was associated with a group of artists known as the Ashcan School. These artists
rebelled against the genteel subjects of the prevailing academic style in favor of ordinary street
scenes and themes that reflected the social realities of urban America. The artists of the Ash
Can School used their art to question what they perceived to be a general complacency affecting
the American public.
In addition to the social aspect of their work, these artists attempted to capture the everyday
scenes taking place on the city streets. The urban pastimes of New Yorkers was a theme favored by
Bellows, and we often find outdoor genre scenes as subject matter for his lithographs.
