  • 1882 Born to George Bellows, Sr., and Anna Smith Bellows, his second wife, in Columbus, Ohio on 12 August
  • 1897-1901 Attends Central High in Columbus
    Plays baseball and basketball
    Decides to become an artist
  • 1901-4 Attends Ohio State University
    Publishes cartoons in the Ohio State, Makio and the Kenyon College yearbook
    Establishes friendship with Joseph Taylor
    Joins Beta Theta Pi fraternity
    Plays basketball for Ohio State and is scouted by professional baseball teams as a shortstop
  • 1904 Leaves Ohio States at end of junior year to go to New York
    Enrolls in the New York School of Art
    Studies with Robert Henri
    Lives at the YMCA
    Plays semi-pro baseball
