Lecture: The Body Adorned

To the Divine Through Beauty

Over the centuries, the sensuous bodily form, female and male, human and divine, has been a dominant feature of the Indian artistic tradition. Vidya Dehejia discusses the portrayal of the idealized and decorated body in Indian art, and its relation to classical and sacred literature and poetry, to reveal the harmony between the Sensuous and the Sacred in the pre-modern Indian ethos.

Create a mixed media, found object sculpture work of art with the same sense of duality, mysterious imagery, and frank approach to mundane aspects of daily life as found in the themes in Marianela de la Hoz.  This three hour workshop will begin with a tour of the exhibition for inspiration.

Dr. Ariel Plotek, Assistant Curator, will discuss Charles Reiffel: An American Post-Impressionist and shed light on this splendid page in the history of American Post-Impressionism. Usually considered a leader of the California plein-air school of painting, Charles Reiffel is reevaluated as a leading practitioner of Post-Impressionism in the United States in this exhibition of over 60 works at the Museum and at the San Diego History Center.

Sex and the Modern City

Through the lens of Haussmannization, a term describing the physical changes made to the urban landscape of Paris between 1851 and 1870, Dr. Julia Marciari-Alexander, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs, will explore the ways that politics, literature, and the visual arts - specifically images of women - intersected in the City of Light during the reign of Napoleon III.

Friday Morning Lecture & Tour Series (Third Friday of each month) focuses on works of art on view in the Museum. All lectures are followed by docent-led tours.
