The Human Beast: Gesture Drawing

Join Marianela del la Hoz and the Latin American Arts Council for an intimate Mexican brunch and special presentation of an imaginary dialogue between the two main characters in the exhibition, the Virgin Mary and Eve.

Exploring Shape

Create 3-dimensional paper sculptures taking inspiration from Tony Rosenthal's Odyssey I, currently on view in the Museum's Sculpture Court. Join a family-friendly tour and participate in gallery activities. November Family Drop-In Days focus on the theme Exploring Shape. Weekly art projects and tours focus on specific works and art making practices found in works on view. 

Recommended for children ages 6-12. Registration is not required, but space is limited.

German Expressionism

Teen artists will create art projects inspired by the German Expressionist drawings, paintings, and prints on view in The Human Beast.  Join an after-hours visit to the galleries for inspiration and and enjoy a live musical performance by Steph Johnson.

Light refreshments will be served.

Charles Reiffel: An American Post-Impressionist

Dr. Ariel Plotek, Assistant Curator, will discuss Charles Reiffel: An American Post-Impressionist and shed light on this splendid page in the history of American Post-Impressionism. Usually considered a leader of the California plein-air school of painting, Charles Reiffel is reevaluated as a leading practitioner of Post-Impressionism in the United States in this exhibition of over 60 works at the Museum and at the San Diego History Center.

Through the lens of Haussmannization, a term describing the physical changes made to the urban landscape of Paris between 1851 and 1870, Dr. Julia Marciari-Alexander, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs, will explore the ways that politics, literature, and the visual arts - specifically images of women - intersected in the City of Light during the reign of Napoleon III.

Friday Morning Lecture & Tour Series (Third Friday of each month) focuses on works of art on view in the Museum. All lectures are followed by docent-led tours.

Behold, America!

Educators are invited to learn new art projects and network with colleagues at the annual Educators' Art Fair. This event is designed especially for K-12 teachers with little or no art training, and will provide lesson-plan ideas for Behold, America!

Dr. Amy Galpin, Assistant Curator of Art of the Americans at The San Diego Museum of Art and curator of Behold, America!, will provide insight on the development of American art spanning three centuries. Watch history in the making through the talents of some of the country’s most significant artists.
