Martha Barnette and Grant Barrett, co-hosts of popular radio program A Way With Words (heard on stations across America and locally on KPBS), will present an hour long discussion of how the American English language has changed in the last three centuries. In conjunction with the Museum’s special exhibition.

Sex and the Modern City

Images of the Courtesan in Second Empire Paris

Through the lens of Haussmannization, a term describing the physical changes made to the urban landscape of Paris between 1851 and 1870, Dr. Julia Marciari-Alexander, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs, will explore the ways that politics, literature, and the visual arts - specifically images of women - intersected in the City of Light during the reign of Napoleon III.

Friday Morning Lecture & Tour Series (Third Friday of each month) focuses on works of art on view in the Museum. All lectures are followed by docent-led tours.

Marianela de la Hoz (b. 1956), Heaven and Earth, the Determined Freedom of an Undetermined Life, Altarpiece, 2012.

A trained drawing instructor will guide you as you focus on extended gesture drawing, taking inspiration from the Renaissance Art Collection and Marianela de la Hoz exhibition during this hands-on drawing workshop 

Class fee includes all supplies.

Family Drop-In Day

Exploring Shape

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
The Studio

Create tiles taking inspiration from works on view in the Museum's Asian art galleries. Join a family-friendly exhibition tour and participate in gallery activities. November Family Drop-In Days will Explore Shape.

Recommended for children ages 6-12. Registration is not required, but space is limited.
