First Friday Films: Do the Right Thing

Spike Lee’s bold and nuanced work about the role of race in the United States examines American identity in conjunction with Behold, America!. While many thought its debut in 1989 would cause race riots, the film instead won multiple Academy Award nominations and offered a poetic, thoughtful, and intense look at the structure of American communities. Lee’s story about one afternoon in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, continues to resonate and to prove relevant to the conversation on race in this country.

Visit the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana for two featured exhibitions, Read My Pins: The Madeleine Albright Collection and Cut! Costume and the Cinema. The Albright collection consists of pins that Secretary Albright, America's Ambassador to the United Nations, and the first woman U.S. Secretary of State, wore before, during, and after becoming a diplomat. Albright discovered the power of jewelry to convey a foreign policy message and the brooches soon became her diplomatic signature; their stories and messages reflecting her sense of humor and humanity.

Second Saturday Workshop: Pastel Portraits

Inspired by Behold America!

Create a pastel portrait taking inspiration from the profiles, palettes and compositions of works on view in the Figures section of Behold, America!. This workshop focuses on observing positive and negative shape relationships in selected subjects and begins with a tour of the exhibition.

The Second Saturday Workshop Series is an adult program that explores exhibitions and installations at the Museum. Each begins with a tour of the related exhibition, followed by the fine art workshop.

Film Screening of The NO. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency is the first major film to be shot entirely on location in the African country of Botswana. Based on the international best-selling novels by Alexander McCall-Smith and produced by the late Anthony Minghella, this HBO film series follows the story of the brave heroine Precious Ramotswe as she traverses the landscape of her country, solving the mysteries of her people, while offering a humorous and energetic view of contemporary African life.

Artist Talk: Pae White

The Chinese Influence on Japanese Landscape Painting

Sonja Simonis, the present Curatorial Assistant at the Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture in Hanford, CA, will speak on the important role China has played in the development of the arts in Japan. One example is the effect it had on Japanese landscape painting of the 18th and 19th centuries, Japanese arts adopted Chinese painting methods, style, and motifs. This lecture takes a closer look at the connections between Chinese and Japanese landscape painting through the centuries.
