Standing Poses

Just in time to celebrate the re-opening of our Asian art galleries, the Museum will once again offer classes of yoga, which originated in India and southern Asia. Instructor Amy Pachowicz will offer one six-week and one four-week course. Strengthen your mind and body as you meditate on the art all around you.

Class size is limited to 15 people.

Class Focus: Standing Poses

Inspired by Charles Reiffel

Create a watercolor landscape painting using colors and materials inspired by the California plein-air school of painting leader Charles Reiffel.  This three hour workshop led by Lucy Eron, Museum Educator, will begin with a tour of the exhibition for inspiration.

The Second Saturday Workshop Series is a NEW adult program that will explore exhibitions and installations at the Museum. Each begins with a tour of the related exhibition, followed by the fine art workshop.

Current issues in urban planning, specifically highlighting the possibilities of designing not just for communities but with communities, will be discussed at this colloquium presented in conjunction with  Beneath the Moon II: Journey through the City.

Looking in Depth at Paintings from the Spanish and Italian Collections of The San Diego Museum of Art

Nigel McGilchrist, Art Historian, will look at paintings in the Museum's Spanish and Italian collection, focusing on the methods by which they were crafted and painted and the way their visual design was conceived. This exploration will reveal insights into the times, minds, and hands of those who created them.

Tom Roberts will gave a presentation on the background and history of the poem "The Congo" by Vashal Lindsay (1931-1979), reflecting on the suffering under King Leopold, the African Diaspora to America, and the impact of African Art in American Art heritage.

A Charles Reiffel Tribute

En Plain-Air, A Charles Reiffel Tribute 2013, a show of selected works submitted for this plein-air competition, opens February 20 through March 27. Celebrate the opening of the exhibition and the competition winners at the reception on February 24. Winning artists selected by jurors Martin E. Petersen, retired Cutrator of American Painting at the San Diego Museum of Art, and Jean Stern, Executive Director of the Irvine Museum.
