Recording Illusionistic Space

Visitors of all ages can invent their own city and explore an imaginary urban environment with others during this guided workshop in Journey Through the City.  Working with more than 1,000 pieces of materials in the space, visitors will be able to manipulate and transform their visionary models of urban landscapes.

Exploring Form

Inspired by Piranesi, Rome, and the Arts of Design

Create a series of intaglio-style prints inspired by the printmaker, architect, antiquarian, and designer Giambattista Piranesi. Traditional intaglio printmaking involves etching a design with acid onto a copper plate and applying oil-based ink to the plate to create a series of prints. During this three-hour workshop, participants will incise graphic designs into plastic and use gouache paint as ink to create a series of prints evoking the same sense of delicacy and refinement of detail as those produced by the original process.

In the Moment: Japanese Art from the Larry Ellison Collection,  on view at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco from June 28 through September 22 and featuring approximately 80 exceptional artworks spanning 1,300 years, will be discussed by Laura W. Allen, Ph.D., Curator of Japanese Art for the Asian Art Museum at the Chong-Moon Lee Center for Asian Art & Culture.

The Museum is closed in preparation for Art Alive 2013

 For the 32^nd annual Art Alive, The San Diego Museum of Art will once again fill the galleries with exquisite floral interpretations of the permanent collection, and the rotunda will be transformed into a breathtaking floral experience, this year by Bella Meyer, granddaughter of artists Marc Chagall and founder and creative director of Fleurs Bella in New York City. As the Museum’s signature fundraiser and a San Diego tradition, Art Alive 2013  provides critical support for the Museum.

Farm to Table Roses

Create a floral display of your own during this hands-on floral workshop with Carlos Franco, Art Alive 2007 & 2009 Rotunda designer and owner of Green Fresh Florals. Explore the history of roses; from farm to table. Learn about the folklore and the significance of roses throughout history and more on the types and names of roses used in the floral industry.
