First Friday Films: Do the Right Thing

Spike Lee’s bold and nuanced work about the role of race in the United States examines American identity in conjunction with Behold, America!. While many thought its debut in 1989 would cause race riots, the film instead won multiple Academy Award nominations and offered a poetic, thoughtful, and intense look at the structure of American communities. Lee’s story about one afternoon in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, continues to resonate and to prove relevant to the conversation on race in this country.

Explore the art element of texture as you create mixed media expressive portraits.  Design, cut, and glue a variety of art materials to assemble a colorful face, under the guidance of our experienced Museum Educators.  Each Sunday inThe Studio we'll explore a new art-making activity inspired by paintings, sculptures, and drawings on view at The Museum.

The Museum Experience

Introductory Meeting

Sunday, 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
The San Diego Museum of Art

Get an unique perspective of a special exhibition and earn academic credit through this package experience designed by the Museum and UCSD Extension. This four-part program, which spans a month's time, begins with an introductory conversation at the Museum followed by a docent-led tour of the featured exhibition. Components include a private lecture with the exhibition curator, as well as the opportunity to attend one of a menu of exhibition-specific programs offered at the Museum. The class concludes with a final meeting in which participants share their Museum experiences.
