Join John Marciari, Ph.D., Curator of European Art and Head of Provenance Research, for an introduction to the catalogue, Italian and Spanish Paintings from the San Diego Museum of Art, the first scholarly catalogue of these important works. The catalogue is scheduled for publication in early 2014, and will allow future generations to understand the collection as it was built from 1926 to 2013.

Artist Talk: Pae White

Artist Pae White is represented in Behold, America! by Hobo Woods/Tears of Vietnam (1999). White is an internationally-renowned artist based in Los Angeles and her work, which often involves the refashioning of unexpected materials, has been included in a number of high profile exhibitions at institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the 2009 Venice Biennale.

The Chinese Influence on Japanese Landscape Painting

Thursday, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Museum Boardroom

Sonja Simonis, the present Curatorial Assistant at the Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture in Hanford, CA, will speak on the important role China has played in the development of the arts in Japan. One example is the effect it had on Japanese landscape painting of the 18th and 19th centuries, Japanese arts adopted Chinese painting methods, style, and motifs. This lecture takes a closer look at the connections between Chinese and Japanese landscape painting through the centuries.

Anthony, and Chief Joseph, and is based on Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States. Presented in conjunction with Behold, America!, the film examines concepts of American history and identity.
