6:30-9:00 p.m. | 7:00 p.m. Artist talk
Celebrate the completion of the Museum's new 70-foot mural, and meet the artists of Writerz Blok who created it. During the dedication, enjoy a no-host bar by Giuseppe’s, music with local DJs, a pop-up shop by Writerz Blok, and brief talks by the muralists.
This event will officially recognize the installation of our new mural, which is inspired by artists such as Diego Rivera, Alfred Ramos Martinez, and Raul Angiano who are featured in the Museum’s exhibition Mexican Modern Painting and permanent collection. The artists began by creating an under-drawing, which was then glazed and painted. By putting thin layers of paint on top of the under-drawing, the tones and textures of the drawing show through, creating depth and shadows. The final work will incorporate graffiti aerosol art with this renaissance approach to murals, bringing together innovation and tradition. Since November 1, the public has been invited to watch the creation in person or online each weeknight from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. The time-lapse video of the creation of this work will be available beginning in early December, and will be on view next to the mural.
This special program is made possible through a collaboration with Writerz Blok, the San Diego-based mural and graffiti group, and the Museum's partnership with the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. For more information, visit the Museum's page for the Writerz Blok Mexican Art Mural.
