7:00 p.m. Pre-film lecture | 8:00 p.m. Film
The People Speak features well-known actors such as Matt Damon, Morgan Freeman, and Josh Brolin reading important documents authored by notable figures from the past including Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, and Chief Joseph, and is based on Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States. Presented in conjunction with Behold, America!, the film examines concepts of American history and identity.
Before the film, Dr. Kelli McCoy, Assistant Professor of History at Point Loma Nazarene University, will give a talk highlighting the voices of “ordinary” often marginalized Americans, by discussing situations in which injustices have occurred based on race, class, and/or gender, specifically in regards to the Mann Act and concepts of "white slavery."
