The paintings of Beverly McIver often feature those closest to her, such as her mother or sister. The artist has said that her pictures of others are still self-portraits: "I use the faces of others who reflect my most inner being." One of McIver's works is included in Young Art 2013, and Raising Renee chronicles the artist's struggle with, and nourishment she receives from her family.
Before the film, Jennifer Dasal, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the North Carolina Museum of Art, will present a lecture entitled Reflections: Portraits by Beverly McIver. The representation of identity is an ongoing challenge for North Carolina artist Beverly McIver. McIver’s portraits from the last two decades have revealed her interest in honestly and directly portraying those closest to her, particularly her mother and her sister, Renee, who is mentally disabled. McIver’s self-portraits, however, showed a hesitance to fully depict herself, while still acknowledging the range of emotions, events, and experiences that affect her daily life. Reflections: Portraits by Beverly McIver charts a trajectory over McIver’s career from masquerade to truth-telling, as influenced by her changing attitudes towards her family and the representations that such attitudes inspired.
Running time: 81 minutes, not rated.
