Istanbul (formerly Constantinople) has been, and remains a meeting point of cultures, continents, languages, religions, and peoples. Looking at the big picture, Dr. Matthew T. Herbst, Faculty Director, Making of the Modern World Program at UC San Diego, will consider the past, present, and future of this place.
Focusing on the city's role as a center of wealth, power, and diversity during the Ottoman Empire, Herbst will look at its profound, and long-lasting, impact on our world: from an ancient Greek city, to a Roman/Byzantine imperial center, to an Ottoman capital, and today's thriving Turkish metropolis.
This is the fourth lecture of the 2014 Friday Morning Lecture & Tour Series. Happening the third Friday of each month, each lecture focuses on works on view and is followed by a docent-led tour. View upcoming lectures.
