About the Collection
The vast range and complex variety of African art can be glimpsed in this selection of works from the Museum’s collection, supplemented by a major recent gift. In 2009, the Museum’s holdings of African art were expanded through the transfer of hundreds of pieces from the Sana Art Foundation. Founded by Museum supporters Edward and Mina Smith, the Sana Art Foundation Collection was created to inspire education, awareness, and access to art from the cultural regions of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. As these works, distinguished by their temporary accession numbers, are catalogued and made a part of the permanent collection, the Museum will better serve its mission to present audiences with art from across the centuries and around the globe.
