Docent Tours and Programs

"The Docent Council shall conduct guided tours in the Museum and make art presentations to interest, inform and educate the public. It shall provide on-going education for its members and strive to maintain excellence."
Docent Council Mission Statement

Museum Tours

The Museum houses a wonderful collection of art and offers many educational programs for both children and adults. SDMA docents are a vital part of the Museum’s education program. Museum docents (teacher-guides) are available to present tours of the permanent collection and special exhibitions to adults, children, and special interest groups while providing personal contact with original works of art.

One-hour tours are scheduled Tuesday through Sunday at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m.Tours in Spanish and other languages are available upon request. No tours are available on the third Tuesday of the month, as the Museum is free on this day.

School Groups

Tours are available for students in grades 1-12. In addition to tours, the Museum offers children’s workshops and slide and PowerPoint programs for students. Requests must be made at least three weeks in advance. For additional information, please see Museum Tours for School Groups.

Adult and Special Interest Groups

Docent-led tours for adult groups may be scheduled through group sales at (619) 696-1935 or groupsales@sdmart.org.

Monthly Scheduled Gallery Tours

SDMA docents offer one-hour tours to the public that are free with museum admission. Meet in front of the docent desk in the Museum’s rotunda. Click here for a full fall schedule of tours.
