Carolyn Wolf 2008 Summer Internship
The San Diego Museum of Art's education department is offering one paid summer internship position designed to provide a 10 week practical experience in a museum setting. The Carolyn Wolf Summer Internship program seeks students who, during the 2008-2009 academic year, will be college seniors or recent college graduates, and graduate level students interested in pursuing a career in museum education.
The 2008 summer intern will work with SDMA’s education department, under the supervision of the Museum Art School manager, for an average of 35 hours per week. The internship stipend is $3,500. The internship is designed to encourage the intern to think critically about how a museum serves as a contemporary educational tool and how patrons of all ages can learn from their experiences in museum galleries and programs. Meetings with department heads, administrators, curators and staff are arranged to provide a complete overview of museum operations.
The scheduled ten weeks, usually from early June to mid August, will include working in the museum art studios and galleries with third grade inner city elementary classes, assisting with summer art camps, participating in SDMA’s Family Festival, researching SDMA’s permanent collection, and assisting in developing lesson plans, gallery tours, and studio based projects. Interns will also spend time examining various developments in art museum education relating to standards based curriculum in California and around the country. Additionally, the intern may select a project to conduct over the ten week period that will ultimately benefit the museum.
The Carolyn Wolf 2008 Summer Internship application must include the following:
- Cover letter stating your interest in applying to this internship and what you hope to gain by it if selected
- Recent school transcript(s)
- Current résumé
- Two letters of recommendation
- Please include a copy of a short paper you have written about a work of art or an image of your artwork or an art education project you have designed/implemented.
