World Events

  • WWII heats up. Germany invades Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France. France is divided into two sections, the German occupied the north (including Paris) and the southern, Vichy, section has a French government that's under the control of the Germans.
  • Leon Trotsky, former Russion revolutionary, is killed in Mexico.
  • Los Angeles opens its first highway, the Arroyo Seco Parkway.

San Diego History

  • Rueben H. Fleet is awarded the bid to build Linda Vista, a defense housing project and the largest building project in San Diego History. 3000 homes were built for $9,070,000. This "Magic City" was completed in only 139 working days.

American Life

  • George Burns and Gracie Allen, along with Spammy the pig, pitch SPAM on their hit radio show. Meanwhile, Hormel Foods makes advertising history with what is believed to be the world's first singing commercial.
  • Nylon stockings go on sale in New York City. Four million pairs sell in just a few hours
