- Construction begins on the first hotel in Mission Valley. "Hotel Circle" is on its way
to becoming the first convention center of San Diego.

- Arthur Miller introduces his play, The Crucible. It marks the peak of communist hysteria. The play compares the McCarthy anti-communist hearings with the
Salem witch trials of 1692.
- Man in the Dark, the first 3D film, debuts in New York City.
- Frank Sinatra and Burt Lancaster star in From Here to Eternity, a hard-hitting
look at the on and off-duty life of soldiers at the Army base in Honolulu in the days before
the Pearl Harbor attack.
The film still has the best waves-on-the-beach love scene in filmdom.
- Gee by the The Crows is released. Itís considered to be one of the first "rock ëní roll" records.

- Candy shelves become more colorful as little yellow chicks arrive. Just Born introduces their Marshmallow Peeps.
- Dow Chemicals introduces Saran Wrap to the public.
- More Americans are watching I love Lucy than any other show on television.
- Studebaker releases the Starliner, a sports car commissioned by Paul Hoffman, then President of Studebaker. Raymond designed the car for the "younger segment of automobile users."
