  • Scientists Crick and Watson describe the structure of the DNA molecule.
  • Korean War comes to an end in September, 1953
  • Adventurers Hillary and Norgay climb Mt. Everest.
  • Julius and Ethel Rosenberg are executed for espionage.
  • Women gain the right to vote in Mexico.

San Diego History

  • Construction begins on the first hotel in Mission Valley. "Hotel Circle" is on its way to becoming the first convention center of San Diego.

Arts

  • Arthur Miller introduces his play, The Crucible. It marks the peak of communist hysteria. The play compares the McCarthy anti-communist hearings with the Salem witch trials of 1692.
  • Man in the Dark, the first 3D film, debuts in New York City.
  • From Here to Eternity
  • Frank Sinatra and Burt Lancaster star in From Here to Eternity, a hard-hitting look at the on and off-duty life of soldiers at the Army base in Honolulu in the days before the Pearl Harbor attack. The film still has the best waves-on-the-beach love scene in filmdom.
  • Gee by the The Crows is released. Itís considered to be one of the first "rock ëní roll" records.
  • West Side Story, the 20th century, American immigrant version of Romeo and Juliet debuts on Broadway.
  • Wrap it up! Dow Chemical creates Saran Wrap.

American Life 1953 Chevrolet Corvette

  • Chevrolet introduces their fiberglass-bodied sportscar, the Corvette.
  • American men were watching more curves that on the Corvette. Hugh Hefner launches his new magazine for men, Playboy. It features a nude photograph of Marilyn Monroe.
  • Peeps
  • Candy shelves become more colorful as little yellow chicks arrive. Just Born introduces their Marshmallow Peeps.
  • Dow Chemicals introduces Saran Wrap to the public.
  • More Americans are watching I love Lucy than any other show on television.
  • The Starliner, by Studebaker
  • Studebaker releases the Starliner, a sports car commissioned by Paul Hoffman, then President of Studebaker. Raymond designed the car for the "younger segment of automobile users."
