 Curatorial Department Internships

Carolyn Wolf Museum Education Internship Fall 2009/Winter 2010

The San Diego Museum of Art’s education department is offering one paid, part time internship position designed to provide a 20 week practical experience in an art museum setting. The Carolyn Wolf Fall and Winter Internship program seeks students who are college seniors, recent college graduates, or graduate level students interested in pursuing a career in art museum education.

The 2009 intern will work with SDMA’s education department under the supervision of Vas Prabhu, Deputy Director for Education and Interpretation, for an average of 17.5 hours per week. An internship stipend is provided. The internship is designed to encourage the intern to consider the role an art museum serves as a viable cultural institution and how visitors of all ages can experience art and their own creativity in the museum galleries and programs. Meetings with department heads, administrators, curators, and staff are arranged to provide a complete overview of museum operations.

The scheduled weeks will include working in the museum art studios and galleries, assisting with all efforts in planning and implementing programs, and researching SDMA’s permanent collection. The intern will also assist in developing lesson plans, gallery tours, studio based projects and presenting programs. In addition, the intern will spend time examining various developments in art museum education relating to standards based curriculum in California, in the museums in Balboa Park and around the country. The intern may select a project to conduct over the period that will ultimately benefit the museum, and reflect the intern’s interest in a specific area of museum education.

The Carolyn Wolf 2009-2010 Fall/ Winter Internship application must include the following:

  • Cover letter stating your interest in applying to this internship and what you hope to gain from it if selected
