  • From the North
    Take Interstate 5 South. Exit on Sassafras Street (Airport exit). Continue to Laurel Street (stoplight). Turn left and follow Laurel Street over the bridge into Balboa Park. The Museum is on the left-hand side (North end) of the plaza where the road dead-ends.

  • From the South
    Take Interstate 5 North. Exit on Sixth Avenue. Turn right onto Sixth Avenue and continue to Laurel Street (stoplight). Turn right and follow Laurel Street over the bridge into Balboa Park. The Museum is on the left-hand side (North end) of the plaza where the road dead-ends.

  • From the East
    Interstate 8 West to State Highway 163 South. Take the University Avenue exit and, making no turns, you will be on Sixth Avenue. Continue to Laurel Street (stoplight). Turn left and follow Laurel Street over the bridge into Balboa Park. The Museum is on the left-hand side (North end) of the plaza where the road dead-ends.

  • From the West
    Harbor Drive to Laurel Street (Laurel Street begins at Harbor Drive). Continue on Laurel Street over the bridge into Balboa Park. The Museum is on the left-hand side (North end) of the plaza where the road dead-ends.

  • Copley Auditorium
    The Copley Auditorium is attached to the San Diego Museum of Art. It is next to the Sculpture Court.

Museum Tours for Schools

The Museum's docents (teacher-guides) lead free tours of the permanent collection and special exhibitions for groups of students (grades 3 through 12) when arranged in advance. These museum tours provide personal contact with original works of art and can enhance any school curriculum. Teachers may request a special emphasis for the tour. One-hour tours are scheduled Tuesday through Thursday at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. Tours are not available on the third Tuesday of the month as this is the Museum's free day for the general public. One adult chaperone is required for each 10 students. Tours are free for students up to age 18. Tours fill up rapidly, so please make requests at least four weeks in advance. Museum Tours for the General Public

When the Museum's docents are not leading a pre-scheduled group tour they may be available to give tours of the Museum's collections and special exhibitions to museum visitors. Please see the schedule in the Rotunda for each day's tours.

SANA Art Foundation

The San Diego Museum of Art is acquiring more than 900 works of art works of art from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas (AOA) as part of a newly formed alliance with the SANA Art Foundation, one of the largest collections of its kind in Southern California.

The Museum is dedicated to presenting and interpreting this historically underrepresented field in an encyclopedic context, and as an institution, The San Diego Museum of Art looks forward to celebrating and exploring the rightful place these works have in the world of great art.

Museum Month

While the San Diego Museum of Art welcomes donations of significant works of art for its permanent collection, we are ethically and legally unable to provide authentication and appraisal services. There are a number of qualified appraisers in the community.
