Description:
The Director of Museum Advancement is a new position at SDMA. This colleague will serve as a critical member of
the Senior Leadership Team. Effectively the chief development officer and primary public relations strategist for
the institution, s/he recommends, develops, and implements successful fundraising objectives and coordinates them
with effective marketing plans. The Director of Museum Advancement will accomplish and extend the mission of the
museum through outstanding leadership and management of an active Development team, soon to be merged with a significant
Marketing and Public Relations effort. The individual who occupies this post must be a strong collaborator, as well as an
ardent and convincing supporter of the museum's role in the community of San Diego.
The Director for Museum Advancement will forge enduring relationships, both internally and externally. Coordinating
development and marketing efforts with curatorial and educational activities is an additional responsibility of this
position. Creating and deepening links with foundations, local philanthropists, news media, government agencies and
others who support the Arts is a further requirement of the job. Ability to lead talented colleagues in their
expanded efforts at fundraising and public recognition is essential, as is an effective approach toward the
budgeting of resources in a non-profit environment. The Director of Museum Advancement will be an articulate
spokesperson for the ambitions of the institution, both present and future, and will possess both skills and
vision for moving the development and marketing programs of SDMA toward new levels of excellence.
Specific Responsibilities:
- The Director of Museum Advancement is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team and reports to the Executive Director;
- S/he will work closely with the Board of Trustees, staff and volunteers to achieve and to increase the museum's annual fundraising capacity and the institution's overall visibility, ensuring the resources necessary to support the museum's mission and role in the community;
- S/he will build upon a currently successful development program by enhancing areas of strength and proactively working to grow areas of opportunity;
- S/he will coordinate the fundraising and marketing efforts of the institution, ensuring consistency of message and growing capacity in both areas of practice;
- S/he is responsible for the strategic leadership of fundraising, with particular emphasis on the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of top level gifts to the institution;
- S/he has-and encourages others'-experience in soliciting large donations and also manages a diverse donor portfolio;
- S/he takes charge of planning and attaining all annual fundraising goals as well as develops future strategies in this area;
- S/he oversees a significant departmental budget and a large staff (approximately 15 employees) working in marketing, design, public relations, membership, grants, individual giving, and corporate support areas;
- S/he coordinates all internal development systems and operations to ensure the museum garners optimum contributed income;
- S/he manages the production of the museum's full-color membership magazine-with a circulation of roughly 15,000-and provides oversight for a wide variety of marketing and development materials;
- S/he ensures the harmonious representation of trustees, donors and public alike while enhancing the museum's profile on local, regional, national, and international spheres of practice.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in relevant field (e.g., Museum Administration, Art History, Communications, or Business Administration) required; Advanced degree preferred;
- Minimum ten years experience in fundraising;
- Minimum five years experience in managing and mentoring personnel;
- Demonstrated ability to solicit major gifts ($100,000+);
- Knowledge of marketing techniques for non-profits and current promotional strategies for the field of museums;
- Comprehensive understanding of the following development areas: Planned Giving; Membership; Annual Fund; Capital Campaign; Government Relations; Strategic Planning; Non-traditional Asset Management;
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills along with a superior record of ethical behavior;
- Ability to work within a complex, fast-paced environment;
- Familiarity with technology as it relates to not-for-profit management;
- Excellent writing, public speaking and communication skills;
- Demonstrated passion for the visual arts;
- Multi-lingual fluency preferred (Spanish a plus);
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and web-based research tools;
Working Conditions:
- Members of the Senior Leadership Team at the San Diego Museum of Art are expected to devote a significant amount of time and energy to the successful fulfillment of their responsibilities. The Director of Museum Advancement must be prepared to work evenings and weekend hours on a fairly regular basis, in addition to fulfilling the performance obligations of a routine workday. Occasional travel for work both within and beyond the region is also required.
