Manager, Public Programs
Classification: Part-time, Exempt
Reports: Deputy Director for Education and Interpretation
Job Summary:
Responsible for development of all SDMA public programs and education events, assist in development of lecture programs, symposia, and other public programs; Serve as event manager and coordinator for all public programs and education events; Public programs present the intellectual ideas of SDMA permanent and special exhibitions and relate art history ideas to cultural history, museum practice, history and other art forms such as music, theatre, dance, when applicable. Public programs are intended for SDMA members, adults, families, and children: some programs focus on scholarly audiences while others focus on general or new audiences. Programs may take place days, evenings, seven days a week both at SDMA and off site. Position involves work with SDMA staff and Support Organizations and various community organizations to present these programs. Supervises Administrative Assistant for Public Programs. Manages Technical Coordinator, hourly event staff and volunteers; Assist Deputy Director of Education as needed on a variety of education projects. Must be available some evenings and weekends.
Qualifications:
Education: Advanced degree or equivalent in Art History or related field. Minimum 3-5 years prior experience in a museum or teaching Art History.
Knowledge: General understanding of arts programming management. Some knowledge of all art forms including music, dance and theatre (including technical theater and stage management) and familiarity with San Diego’s cultural organizations. Visitor Experience.
Abilities: Ability to work effectively to multi-task and work under pressure using solid time management skills Ability to work with colleagues in other cultural institutions. Ability to be culturally sensitive and respect diversity.
Skills: Effective oral communication/interpersonal skills. Strong administrative, verbal and written and research skills. Strong organizational and supervisory skills. Excellent computer skills and experience with managing budgets. Bilingual in Spanish preferred. Training in CPR useful.
Other Requirements: Valid California Driver’s license, insurance and be willing to use it on the job preferred.
Physical Demands:
- Sitting and using computer 50% of the time
- Carrying and lifting up to 30 lbs
- Walk spiral staircase to auditorium “rail”
Work Environment:
- Office space is shared with Administrative Assistant, Public Programs
- Noise level is generally quiet
