The Baldwin M. Baldwin Collection

THE Baldwin M. Baldwin Collection at the San Diego Museum of Art consists of ninety-five drawings, paintings, and prints charting the extraordinary life and art of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901). Its range spans the whole of Lautrec's creative career, from drawings made during his early days in Paris to lithographs from the years just before his death in 1901.

Baldwin M. Baldwin was the grandson of Elias Jackson Baldwin, a founding father of the city of Arcadia, California. The relationship between the San Diego Museum of Art and the Baldwin M. Baldwin Foundation has been a long and rewarding one. Our visitors have benefited from the generosity and good will of the Foundation and its president, Maruja Baldwin Hodges, since we first exhibited the collection in 1972.

The donation of the collection to the San Diego Museum of Art in 1987 was the culmination of fifteeen years of collaboration and friendship. Now, through the medium of the world-wide web, we are able to share a major part of the collection with an expanded viewing public. Presented here are thirty-two images representing the complete run of Lautrec's posters.

A fully illustrated catalogue offers an in-depth look at the collection, and surveys Lautrec's life, technique, and the period in which he worked. The book reproduces each work as a full-page color illustration.

The catalogue was written by Nora Desloge, former curator of European art at the San Diego Museum of Art, and includes her essay on Lautrec's technique and style. Additional essays were written by Phillip Dennis Cate, director of the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum on the thematic preoccupation with brothels, café-concerts, and the circus in the work of Lautrec and his contemporaries; and Julia Frey, associate professor of French at the University of Colorado, Boulder on Lautrec's life as seen through his art.
