Exhibition Overview
Organized by the San Diego Museum of Art, Domains of Wonder: Selected Masterworks of Indian Painting is a major
exhibition consisting of 124 paintings and 2 bound manuscripts from India made between the 14th and 19th century.
Drawn from the Museum's Edwin Binney 3rd Collection, this is the largest nationally touring exhibition to so
thoroughly showcase the richness and depth of this remarkable collection.

Exhibition Curators
B.N. Goswamy studied history at the Panjab University in Chandigarh, India, later specializing in the history
of Indian art. For more than 30 years, he taught as a professor of art history at the Panjab University,
where he was also director of the University Museum of Fine Arts. He has been visiting professor at the
Universities of Heidelberg, Pennsylvania, California (at Berkeley and Los Angeles), Texas, and Zürich;
and has lectured extensively in Europe, the United States, and India. Most of his publications have
been in the area of Indian painting, Imperial land grants, and the history of Indian costume. He is currently
professor emeritus at the Panjab University.
Caron Smith received a Ph.D. in Chinese art and archaeology from the NYU Institute of Fine Arts. She has worked
at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in the Department of Asian Art and the Office of the President; at the Asia
Society, New York, as associate director of galleries and curator of the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd
Collection; and at the San Diego Museum of Art, where she was senior curator of Asian Art. She is currently
chief curator and deputy director of the Rubin Museum of Art in New York.
Sonya Rhie Quintanilla, SDMA's curator of Asian art is the project manager for this exhibition. She received a Ph.D.
in South Asian art history from Harvard University and taught as a professor of art history at the University of
California, Irvine, and was also a visiting professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. Since joining
SDMA in spring 2004, she has curated Origins of Mughal Painting and Devotional Arts of Nepal from the collection of
Edwin Binney 3rd and has overseen installations of the Museum's Asian art collections. She is also currently working
on her forthcoming book, History of Early Stone Sculpture at Mathura (ca. 150 BCE-100 CE).

Domains of Wonder: Selected Masterworks of Indian Painting. The book includes full-color illustrations of
