Internationally Famed Guitarists Petar Jankovic and Karin Schaupp Perform at SDMA

SAN DIEGO—World-renowned guitarists Petar Jankovic and Karin Schaupp bring to life Renaissance and Baroque paintings in the San Diego Museum of Art's Hibben Gallery in two separate installments of the Chamber Music Concert Series on February 24 and March 24, respectively.

Best known for his ability to expressively communicate personal interpretations of classical pieces through his technical mastery of the guitar, Petar Jankovic will perform a stylish variety of pieces from Torroba, Albeniz, Tansman, Merlin, Dyens, and Piazzolla on Thursday, February 24, at 7:00 p.m. A native Yugoslavian, Jankovic has been delighting audiences and garnering international awards since the inception of his career in 1985. At age 16, Jankovic had his first professional performance, and by age 20 the award-winning musician was teaching classical guitar to college students in Belgrade.

In 1996, Jankovic moved to the United States to pursue the prestigious Artist Diploma Degree at the Indiana University School of Music. He developed a guitar program at Franklin College of Indiana in 1997. Currently, he pursues intersecting careers of teaching and performing music as a faculty member at the Indiana University School of Music, the University of Indianapolis, and Franklin College. Jankovic has also released two albums, the most recent in 2002: Bogdanovic, Brouwer, Dyens.

Karin Schaupp—performing Thursday, March 24, at 7:00 p.m.-is a top-selling Warner Music recording artist and is touted as "a poet of the guitar" in her native Australia. She performs widely as a recitalist, concerto soloist, and festival guest on the international scene. Her magical presence and possession of her craft have inspired contemporary composers to write works especially for her. Training since the age of five almost exclusively with her guitarist mother Isolde Schaupp, Karin has completed a Masters degree and received the University Gold Medal and the prestigious Music Council of Australia Freedman Fellowship in recognition of her achievements. Since signing with Warner Music in 1997, Schaupp has recorded three albums that all topped the classical music list in Australia shortly after their release. Her latest album Evocation is described as "possessing expression like that of an old master."

Recently Schaupp has co-founded two guitar ensembles: The World Guitar Trio, based in the U.S. (with Chris McGuire and Carlos Barbosa-Lima) and Saffire, The Australian Guitar Quartet (with Slava Grigoryan, Gareth Koch, and Anthony Field). She will interpret works by Albeniz, Barrios, Charlton, and Dyens, among others, in her solo performance at the Museum.

Both Jankovic and Schaupp's performances take place in the Museum's Hibben Gallery, an elegant room showcasing an important collection of Renaissance and Baroque portraiture, Dutch genre paintings, and old master still-lifes. The Hibben Gallery initiates a dialogue between classical music and art, creating a unique intimate space for live performances.

Tickets to the concerts, which include same-day museum admission, are $18 for members and $20 for nonmembers and are available for advance purchase at the Museum or through Ticketmaster at (619) 220-8497 or www.ticketmaster.com. For more information, contact the Museum at (619) 696-1966.
