In Stabiano: Exploring the Ancient Seaside Villas of the Roman Elite
February 18 through May 14, 2006

Request High-Resolution Images

Exhibition Overview

This rare traveling exhibition of Roman frescoes features 72 objects, all from the Roman villas of ancient Stabiae, an exclusive retreat for Rome's elite classes located on a bluff overlooking the Bay of Naples (approximately 4.5 kilometers southeast of Pompeii). Included in this spectacular exhibition are 24 ancient frescoes, many of the very highest quality, 11 stuccoes, as well as other significant art objects and archaeological artifacts. The exhibition will also display a complete three-wall triclinium (dining room) fresco from the small nearby villa of Carmiano.

Exhibition Sponsorship

In Stabiano: Exploring the Ancient Seaside Villas of the Roman Elite is organized by the Archaeological Superintendancy of Pompeii and the Restoring Ancient Stabiae Foundation, tour managed by International Arts & Artists, and partially sponsored by NIAF and the Grand Circle Foundation.

Local presentation is made possible by Expo Italia, the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, the County of San Diego Community Enhancement Program, and members of the San Diego Museum of Art.

Exhibition Curators

Thomas Noble Howe, Ph.D., is the coordinator general of the Restoring Ancient Stabiae Foundation and Brown Distinguished Research Professor at Southwestern University, where he is chair of the art history department. He is also the senior co-curator of the exhibition, co-editor of the catalogue, and author of its lead and final articles. Howe has contributed to many publications on field archaeology, as well as architectural history and theory, including The Romano-British Villa at Castle Copse, Great Bedwyn (Indiana University Press, 1997), Ten Books on Architecture (Cambridge University Press, 1999), and The Order of Architecture (in progress). Howe received bachelor's degrees in German literature and philosophy from Lawrence University, studied architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and later received his master's degree and Ph.D. in Fine Arts from Harvard.

Steven Kern is curator of European art at the San Diego Museum of Art and is coordinating the San Diego presentation of the exhibition. Since joining the Museum in July 1997, Kern has curated several exhibitions including Idol of the Moderns: Pierre-Auguste Renoir and American Painting (2002), The Rival of Painting: The Lithographs of Albert Belleroche (2001), and The Age of Rembrandt: Etchings from Holland's Golden Century (2001). Kern received his master's degree in the history of art from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and bachelor's degrees in both art history and French language and literature from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Installation of Ancient Objects from SDMA's Collection

In conjunction with the exhibition, the Museum is presenting an installation of approximately seventeen ancient objects from its collection, ranging in date from the first to the sixth centuries AD. The installation features a selection of objects from the greater Mediterranean basin, which illustrate a certain consistency in the arts around the Empire. Other pieces, such as Gandharan sculptures, refer to the flow of Greco-Roman cultural influence beyond the boundaries of the Empire, into distant lands connected through trade. The installation includes mosaics, jars, flagons, vases, and a variety of other containers from Italy, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
