Personal Views: Regarding Private Collections in San Diego

In conjunction with Personal Views, the San Diego Museum of Art is presenting several programs to complement the exhibition and offer more insight into collecting art.

Appraisal Day
November 4, Saturday
10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. (last reservation at 3:00 p.m.)
In conjunction with the Museum’s 80th Anniversary and SDMA’s special exhibition Personal Views, museum members will have the opportunity to speak with a professional appraiser from Bonhams & Butterfields. Auction estimates will be made available for furniture, decorative arts, paintings, prints, photographs, silver, books, manuscripts, and collectibles. Reservations are available by calling the public programs office at (619) 696-1969. Limit 4 items per member. Size of item limited to what members can carry; photographs of large items accepted. $25 first item/$20 each additional item/$15 photograph of item (open to SDMA members only, reservations required), James S. Copley Auditorium

Collectors Panel
November 16, Thursday 6:00 p.m. In conjunction with Personal Views, Robert Pincus, art critic for the San Diego Union-Tribune, will moderate a panel of two to three prominent collectors, artists, and/or gallery owners. Participants will be announced soon at www.sdmart.org. Due to gallery size, seating is limited to 60. Free with admission, Personal Views gallery

The San Diego Museum of Art’s Artists Guild is presenting its third annual Fine Art Festival. This unique event offers for sale one-of-a-kind artwork from local fine artists and features original paintings, sculpture, jewelry, photography, and more. The Museum will receive a percentage of all sales.

Education Class: Every Picture Has a Story: Dealers, Collectors, and Donors who Helped Shape the SDMA Collection

Wednesdays, October 11–November 15

Examine the fascinating journeys made by more than a dozen selected SDMA artworks, as well as the people who touched them along the way. Included in the colorful cast of characters are collectors, dealers, and donors—both famous and obscure—ranging from European nobility to industrial tycoons, scholars to movie stars, and entrepreneurs to heiresses, with perhaps a scoundrel or two to boot.
