Provenance

Prince Luigi Alberico Trivulzio (1868-1938), Milan, until 1927[1.]; (with Matissen, Berlin, 1927-39)[2.]; (with Jacob M. Heimann, New York, 1939-50)[3.]; purchased by Anne R. and Amy Putnam for the Fine Arts Gallery (now SDMA), San Diego, California, 1950.

Provenance Notes

  1. According to Jacob M. Heimann this painting had been in the Trivulzio family of Milan for over 300 years (Jacob M. Heimann correspondence to Reginald Poland, SDMA curatorial files, May 20, 1942).
  2. According to Heimann, he bought this painting from Prince Trivulzio, acting as an agent for Matissen, Berlin, in 1927. He retained an interest in the painting which he states Matissen was not able to sell for many years.
  3. According to Heimann, he sent the painting from Germany to Italy in 1939. The work was exhibited in Milan, at the Palazzo dell'Arte, Mostra di Leonardo da Vinci exhibition, May-October, 1939 and eventually entered the US. (Jacob M. Heimann correspondence to Reginald Poland, SDMA curatorial files, May 20, 1942).
