DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, July 23\n6:00–8:00 p.m.\nJohn M. and Sally B. Thornton Rotunda \n  \nGallery Collective members are invited to meet and mingle with the local artists featured in the Centennial exhibition Local Visions: Reimagining the Façade\, now on view in SDMA Gallery 6. The featured artists from the region will be in attendance to discuss their artwork and process. \nAlong with a viewing of the exhibition\, guests will learn about the local arts scene as each artist introduces themselves accompanied by a visual presentation of their works of art. Join or upgrade today by calling 619.696.1941 to secure your seats for this event. \n  \nAbout the Exhibition \nLocal Visions: Reimagining the Façade celebrates the creativity and vision of artists from across our region\, each offering a distinctive interpretation of The San Diego Museum of Art’s iconic Spanish Colonial Revival façade. Conceived as part of the Museum’s Centennial\, Local Visions grew out of an open call that invited local artists to reimagine the Museum’s landmark exterior through their own contemporary perspectives. The response to the call was remarkable\, with an inspiring range of proposals that demonstrated the depth of talent in our community. From these submissions\, a selection of works was chosen to reflect both the diversity of artistic approaches and the shared sense of connection to this historic building. \nTogether\, these works illuminate how a single façade can serve as both subject and symbol; honored\, transformed\, and reinterpreted in ways that bridge community and architecture\, past and present\, tradition and innovation. \nMany thanks to the artists whose work appears in the exhibition. \n  \nFeatured at top right: Wagner Humphreys\, Timeless (detail)\, 2025. DESCRIPTION:Second and fourth Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. \n  \nFamily Art Adventures bring the Museum collection to life for families.\nFamily Art Adventures are dynamic free guided tours specially designed for families with school-aged children ages 5 to 12. Tours are offered the second and fourth Saturdays of each month at 10:30 a.m. Family tour themes change monthly\, and each family tour is followed by a hands-on art-making activity. SUMMARY:Buddhist Sculpture Insights
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, July 30\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Ginna Olsen and Heather Simmerman\, Asian art scholars and SDMA Docents\nVirtual Event \n  \n\nJoin the Asian Arts Council in exploring the history of two important Buddhist sculptures in the SDMA collection. Ginna Olsen will discuss the 6th century Chinese Bodhisattva stone sculpture and Heather Simmerman will present the 17th century Japanese Amida Buddha wood sculpture\, all currently on view in the SDMA Asian Gallery 7. They will contextualize the sculptures to position them within the history of Chinese and Japanese Buddhist art\, respectively. The religious\, political\, and social messages that were conveyed through their creation and iconography will also be explained. \n  \nSpeaker Bios: Ginna Olsen graduated from the University of Redlands with a B.A. in Art History\, then earned her M.A. in Art History with an emphasis on Asian Art at USC. She retired in 2019 from a career in business and has been a docent at SDMA since 2021. \nHeather Simmerman earned a B.A. in Biology from Northwestern University\, a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Indiana University\, and in 2025 received a Post Graduate Certificate in Asian Art from SOAS University of London.  She is currently studying for a Certificate of Achievement in Japanese at MiraCosta College.
