SUMMARY:Modern & Contemporary Art from India: The First Modern Painters--From Amrita Sher-Gil To Bombay Progressives
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 11\n10:00 a.m.–noon PT\nSpeaker: Betty Seid\, independent curator\, writer\, and lecturer \n  \nJoin the South Asian Arts Council for a four-part series on Modern & Contemporary Art from India. The second lecture in the series focuses on The First Modern Painters: From Amrita Sher-Gil To Bombay Progressives. \n\nBegin with Amrita Sher-Gil\, arguably the first professional Modern artist in India\, and then proceed to the mid-century emergence (concurrent with the 1947 Independence of India) of the Progressive Art Group in Bombay. Their presence (and their legacy) is dominated by two founding artists: M. F. Husain and F.N. Souza. We will look closely at the work of these two prolific rebel painters—so different in style\, yet each representing the dynamic creative energy of India’s rebirth as a nation. \n\nBetty Seid is an independent curator\, writer\, and lecturer. She was previously Research Associate and Exhibition Coordinator for South Asian Art in the Department of Asian Art of The Art Institute of Chicago. Her exhibition (and catalog) New Narratives: Contemporary Art from India was the first to show 21st-century Indian art in the United States. \n\n  \n\nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \nSave my spot! \nFree for active South Asian Arts Council (renewed for 2021-2022) and SDMA members | $5 for all others \n  \nSponsored by the South Asian Arts Council. \n  \nFeatured: F.N. Souza\, Pieta\, 1947. | M.F. Husain\, Tribal Women\, n.d.
