SUMMARY:Nothing = Something: Japanese Aesthetics in the Art of Sam Francis
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 27\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Hollis Goodall\, Curator of Japanese Art\, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)\nVirtual Event \n  \nSam Francis (1923–1994) spent many of the years between 1957 and the early 1990’s traveling between his studios in Japan and California. His friendships with avant-garde artists in Osaka and Tokyo introduced him to the principles of the art movements Gutai (meaning concrete or concreteness) and Mono-ha (the school of things). The missions of these two artist groups change the approach to art by allowing the materials to speak of their inherent qualities. Corporate magnate\, art collector\, and patron—and for a time his father-in-law\, Idemitsu Sazō\, taught Sam Francis through his personal art collection to understand the greater field of Japanese aesthetics. \nThis lecture will center around an exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) entitled Sam Francis and Japan: Emptiness Overflowing\, and Japanese aesthetics old and new that can be perceived in the paintings and prints of this foremost artist. \n  \nPlease note\, this session will be conducted virtually via Zoom. \nPlease save your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link via confirmation email with instructions once you secure your place. Space is limited. \n  \nSave my spot!\n  \nSponsored by the Asian Arts Council. \n  \nFeatured at top right: Sam Francis\, Towards Disappearance\, 1957–58\, Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, Modern and Contemporary Art Council Fund\, © 2023 Sam Francis Foundation\, California/Artists Rights Society (ARS)\, New York\, photo © Museum Associates/LACMA
