SUMMARY:In Search of Sonder: Inspiring Empathy through Art
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 20\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeakers: Carlo Miranda\, Artist and Anita Feldman\, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs\, The San Diego Museum of Art\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \n“Sonder” is a term coined by author John Koenig\, meaning “the profound feeling of realizing that everyone\, including strangers passing in the street\, has a life as complex as one’s own\, which they are constantly living despite one’s personal lack of awareness of it. Each subject has their own story\, their own dreams and desires and worries.” \nLocal artist Carlo Miranda (Filipino-American\, b. 1988) showcases ten recent paintings in his intimate exhibition\, Carlo Miranda: In Search of Sonder\, on view at The San Diego Museum of Art through November 19\, 2023. His personal and hyperrealistic portraits\, painted in oil on panel\, depict those closest to him: his family\, his friends\, his barber. \nJoin Miranda and Anita Feldman\, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs\, for an in-person conversation as they discuss Miranda’s life and the inspiration for his exhibition at the Museum. Hear too about Miranda’s process in creating his signature hyperrealistic portraits and how he aims to help viewers develop empathy toward his subjects or even construct imaginary stories of their lives. \n  \nPlease note\, this lecture is in-person only and held at the state-of-the-art MOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater. \n$10 members and students | $15 seniors and military | $20 nonmembers \nSave my spot!\n  \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led virtual tours. \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council. \n  \nFeatured: Carlo Miranda\, The Barber (detail)\, 2022. Oil on panel.
