SUMMARY:Friends’ Lecture & Reception: Korea in Color
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 12\, 2024\n6:00 p.m. Lecture (ticketed event)\n7:00–8:30 p.m. Private Reception\nJames S. Copley Auditorium \n  \nKorea in Color: A Legacy of Auspicious Images sheds light on the use of color in Korean painting—known as polychrome painting (chaesaekhwa)—and its role in Korean culture. Join us for an insightful conversation exploring the history and influence of polychrome painting and its legacy of auspicious imagery. \nEleanor Soo-ah Hyun is The Korea Foundation and Samsung Foundation of Culture Associate Curator of Korean Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Prior to joining The Met in 2019\, she was the first Curator for the Korean Collections at The British Museum. At The Met\, she has curated exhibitions on Korean mother-of-pearl lacquer and ritual vessels. Her exhibition Lineages: Korean Art at The Met  (November 7th\, 2023 – October 20th \, 2024) focuses on modern and contemporary art and celebrates the 25th anniversary of The Met’s Arts of Korea gallery. \nRachel Jans is Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the San Diego Museum of Art and co-curator of Korea in Color: A Legacy of Auspicious Images. Previously she was a curator at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, where she organized a range of exhibitions\, including New Work: Nevin Aladağ; Lineage: Paul Klee and Ruth Asawa; Nam June Paik: In Character\, among others. She holds a PhD in Art History from the University of Chicago\, where her research was supported by numerous awards\, including a Fulbright Fellowship\, the Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies at the Freie Universität\, and a Whiting Dissertation Fellowship. \nKorea in Color: A Legacy of Auspicious Images is on view October 28\, 2023–March 3\, 2024. \nShow your lecture ticket for free same-day Museum admission before the lecture from 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. on Friday\, January 12. \n\nTickets for admission to the lecture only are available to general membership and the public. \nFriend-level members and above enjoy free admission to the lecture and a private reception from 7:00–8:30 p.m. inside the Museum rotunda.
