Marcy Sculpture Garden\n \n  \nJoin Museum educators in the Museum garden and create a mixed-media artwork inspired by medieval astrolabes.\n Experience awe and wonder through creating an artwork using simple geometry\, pencils\, and tools of precision (a compass and ruler) to design your unique birthdate star marker. The star marker depicts your birthdate and corresponding constellation. \nThis Community Art Workshop is inspired by the astrolabes on view in Wonders of Creation: Art\, Science\, and Innovation in the Islamic World\, a special exhibition on view at The San Diego Museum of Art September 7\, 2024–January 5\, 2025. \nNo reservation required. All materials will be provided. \n  \nGreat for artists of all ages\, Community Art Workshops invite artists to enjoy hands-on art making experiences inspired by the thinking and creating processes of artists on view at the Museum. \n  \nProgramming made possible with support from Nissan Foundation.

SUMMARY:Angel Tarrac: New Beginnings by Carlos Tarrac
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 10\n2:00–4:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Carlos Tarrac\nSDMA Board Room\n \n  \nJoin the Latin American Art Council in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico to hear Carlos Tarrac talk about the well-known sculptor Angel Tarrac and the successful artistic trajectory of his father\, who arrived in Mexico in 1942 as a refugee of the Spanish Civil War. His sculptures are located in several border cities in Mexico\, and one version of the Coat of Arms of Mexico is found in the Consulate of Mexico in San Diego. One of his sculptures is found in the gardens of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Additional notable works by Angel Tarrac include statues of Abraham Lincoln and José Maria Morelos at the Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City. \n  \nSpeaker Bio: Carlos Tarrac holds a master’s of education degree and has taught in California public schools for over two decades. An accomplished author\, translator\, and illustrator of fiction and nonfiction for all ages\, his poems feature in international anthologies.
