SUMMARY:Art Museum Day
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 17\n10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. \nThe Museum will be open with FREE general admission from 10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. on Friday\, May 17 for Art Museum Day. \n\nFor the 10th anniversary year of Art Museum Day\, The San Diego Museum of Art will join the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) and hundreds of institutions across North America in offering great opportunities for our audiences. This year\, the Museum will offer free general admission to recognize the arts and the important role that art museums play in their communities. The Museum also invites visitors to share their Art Museum Day experiences via social media\, with the hashtag #ArtMuseumDay. \nAAMD’s Art Museum Day is an opportunity to focus attention on the role of art museums in North America. The initiative is an extension of the International Council of Museums’s (ICOM) International Museum Day\, a global program embracing all different types of museums. Last year\, the San Diego Museum of Art—along with more than 150 other AAMD member museums of varying sizes across the United States\, Canada\, and Mexico—participated in Art Museum Day. \nA comprehensive list of participating AAMD member art museums will be available on the AAMD website. Note that while AAMD’s Art Museum Day and ICOM’s International Museum Day are formally held each year on May 18\, some institutions\, like the San Diego Museum of Art\, shift their events to adjacent dates.

SUMMARY:Film: Bloody Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 25\n8:00 p.m.\nJames S. Copley Auditorium \nThe Museum offers the following film in connection with the exhibition Tim Shaw: Beyond Reason. \nSet a mere seven months before the Belfast bombings that inspired Tim Shaw’s immersive piece Mother\, the Air is Blue\, the Air is Dangerous\, Bloody Sunday recreates in minute detail the events leading up to and following “Bloody Sunday\,” in which British soldiers shot 28 unarmed Irish civilians during a peaceful protest march in Derry\, Northern Ireland. Bloody Sunday not only offers valuable historical context in understanding the origins of many of Shaw’s pieces\, but also compellingly depicts a conflict whose repercussions are still deeply felt today. 107 minutes\, rated R. \nJoin us before the film screening at 7:00 p.m. inside the Museum for Art of Élan Pop Up Concert: Beyond Reason\, inspired by the featured exhibition. This concert is free with your film screening ticket or Museum admission. \n\n$5 members and students | $7.50 seniors and military | $10 nonmembers \nShow your film screening ticket for free Museum same-day admission during Art After Hours from 5:00–8:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Film: The Dawn Patrol
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 9\n8:00 p.m.\nJames S. Copley Auditorium \nThe Museum offers the following film in connection with the exhibition Artists at War: American Posters of World War I. \nClassic Hollywood stalwarts Errol Flynn\, David Niven\, and Basil Rathbone star as three British fighter pilots facing impossible odds and a series of increasingly dangerous aerial missions over war-torn France in the early years of World War I. Since its release\, The Dawn Patrol (1938) has contributed greatly to the romanticized mythology and iconography of World War I—scarf-sporting fighter aces\, thrilling aerial dogfights\, the legend of the “Red Baron”—yet doesn’t shy away from depicting the emotional and mental toll of the war on those who fought it. 103 minutes\, not rated. \n$5 members and students | $7.50 seniors and military | $10 nonmembers \nEnjoy free same day Museum admission from 5:00–8:00 p.m. offered during On the Steps at SDMA: A Veteran’s Day Event
