SUMMARY:James Balog: Photographs from the Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 17\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeakers: James Balog\, Artist\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \nJames Balog: Photographs from the Anthropocene\, on view through March 10\, 2024\, at the Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art (MOPA@SDMA)\, showcases a series of photographs that describes the ancient cyclical patterns of the earth’s life forms and the impact of human activity. For four decades\, James Balog has studied ancient cultural assumptions about the relationship between human nature and the rest of nature. Blending art and science\, Balog’s photographs deliver profound new insights about the environment today. \nThe current epoch of geologic time is known as the “Anthropocene” to reflect the pervasive and enduring traces of human activity left on the Earth. SUMMARY:Wunderkammerkŏri: Reimagining and Reinventing Ancestral Legacy through Collecting and Display
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 28\n1:00–3:00 p.m. PT\nSpeaker: Mirae kh RHEE\, Artist-in-Residence\, Museum für Asiatische Kunst and Ethnologisches Museum\, Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin\nVirtual Event \n  \nIn this lecture\, transnational artist Mirae kh RHEE invites us into the long history of the collector and collections from both Asia and Europe. This multimedia project interrogates the presentation and collection practices of the male ruling elite and examines works from collections that extend from the famed Green Vault in Dresden to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The artist has fashioned a new interpretation of the cabinet of curiosities\, which she calls Wunderkammerkŏri\, a mash-up of German and Korean languages. Wunderkammern\, or cabinets of curiosities\, arose in mid-16th century Europe as repositories for wondrous objects but gradually appeared in 17th–18th century Qing China and Joseon Korea in the form of Chinese treasure boxes (Duobaoge) and Korean still-life genre painting of books and the scholar’s room (Munbangdo). Working in drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, installation\, participatory practices\, and emerging technologies\, like augmented reality\, the artist speaks about her motivations and exhibition plans. \n  \nArtist Biography \nSouth Korean born social practice artist (이미래/李未來) Mirae kh RHEE’s transracial life experiences led her to work between the United States\, South Korea\, and Germany\, where learning foreign languages\, code-switching\, and cultural traditions and customs continuously inform her artwork. Through the lens of transnational feminism and decolonial approaches\, she creates complex research-based Gesamtkunstwerk(e) that tell auto-ethnographical narratives. RHEE received her MFA in studio art at the University of California–Irvine\, where she was a graduate studies diversity scholar and a Jacob K. Javits Fellow. As the current Artist-in-Residence at the Museum für Asiatische Kunst and Ethnologisches Museum\, Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin\, she developed and exhibited her first augmented reality artwork Sammel-Sucht/Collecting Crave. Her solo project will be presented at the Museum für Asiatische Kunst in 2024 and at the Residenzschloss Dresden in 2025. SUMMARY:Art and the Environment: An Artist Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, May 3\n10:00 a.m.–noon\nVirtual Friends Lecture and Docent Guest Lecture\nSpeakers: Fernando Casasempere\, ceramic artist; Anya Gallaccio\, artist and professor\, Department of Visual Arts at the University of California\, San Diego; Rebeca Méndez\, artist\, designer\, and Chair of the UCLA Design Media Arts department; and John Mireles\, photographic artist\nModerator: MacKenzie Elmer\, environment reporter for Voice of San Diego \n  \nEach artist will share how their artistic practice and work speaks to issues around land\, the environment\, climate change\, and waste. \nUnified in their innovative and exploratory use of materials and subjects\, artists Fernando Casasempere\, Anya Gallaccio\, Rebeca Méndez\, and John Mireles will gather to discuss their individual practices creating works that invite us to explore our relationship with nature and the earth. While employing different media\, these artists reveal the powerful human presence and influence that remains in the objects\, landscapes\, and environments we inhabit. The conversation will be moderated by Voice of San Diego’s Environment Reporter\, MacKenzie Elmer. \n  \nFree for SDMA docents and members at the Friend level and above | $5 suggested donation for all others \nReserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once registration is complete. \nReserve My Spot \n  \nArtist Panelists: \nFernando Casasempere’s ceramic forms are often inspired by the effects of machines and mass production on the environment and modern society\, including a monumental field of ceramic and steel flowers in the courtyard of Somerset House\, called Out of Sync\, which has now been installed in the Atacama Desert of his native Chile. Casasempere’s ceramics are produced using waste from mining and drilling to create vibrant colors and\, as in pre-Columbian art\, his works are unglazed. He currently lives and works in London\, having brought twelve tons of his own clay mixtures from Chile with him. An exhibition of his work\, titled TERRA: Fernando Casasempere will be on view beginning April 29\, 2022\, at The San Diego Museum of Art. \nAnya Gallaccio creates site-specific\, minimalist installations and often works with organic material such as flowers\, fruit\, plants\, sand\, stones\, and ice. Gallaccio’s practice engages us with the dualities of nature and transience versus the fixed and creates a tension between what we believe is beautiful and benign\, and its far more complex existence. Her natural material choice results in real-time processes of transformation and decay\, exploring ideas around memory and the presence of something that is no longer there. Gallaccio was born in Paisley\, Scotland\, and she is a professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of California\, San Diego. \nRebeca Méndez works with various resources and technologies to invoke new balances between the artificial and the natural\, between humans and nature. Méndez is an artist\, designer\, and Chair of the UCLA Design Media Arts department\, where she is director of the CounterForce Lab\, a research and fieldwork studio dedicated to using art and design to develop creative collaborations\, research\, and projects around the social and ecological impacts of climate change. Méndez’s interests and initiatives are a bridge between art\, design\, and science\, and demonstrate a commitment to a sustainable future. \nJohn Mireles works in the medium of photography\, often inviting the public to participate in additional meaning-making through the hands-on destruction of his artwork. In 2019 he traveled to photograph areas in the United States that had previously been protected but were since opened to drilling and mining\, and exhibited these photographs at The San Diego Museum of Art in 2021 as Disestablishment: John Raymond Mireles. In order to create a visceral understanding of the potential for damage that awaits these environments\, after one month of exhibition\, members of the public were then invited to hammer on\, cut away\, stomp on\, tear\, and mark up the prints. After the works had been damaged\, they were reconstructed and re-hung for continued exhibition. These images and actions pose the question\, “If we are hesitant to damage these prints\, why are we okay with allowing the actual environment to be destroyed by commercial exploitation?” \n  \nModerator: \nMacKenzie Elmer is an environment and energy reporter at Voice of San Diego\, a non-profit investigative journalism newsroom. She obtained a master’s in climate science and policy at Scripps Institution of Oceanography\, where she explored the impact of lithium extraction on indigenous Chilean communities driven by market and political demand for renewable energy in California. She began her journalism career in Iowa after completing a journalism and Spanish bachelors at University of Iowa and covered everything from politics to crime at newsrooms like The Des Moines Register and the Associated Press. \n

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: El Sueño Mexicano by Jorge Tellaeche
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 13 \n5:30 p.m. \n  \n\nJoin prominent Mexican artist Jorge Tellaeche for a presentation and in-depth discussion on his work El Sueño Mexicano (The Mexican Dream)\, a mural installed on the international border between Tijuana and San Diego that was first unveiled on Wednesday\, December 17\, 2019\, in coordination with the celebration of International Migrants Day. Originally placed in Playas de Tijuana\, the mural standing 32 feet wide by 19 feet high is made up of Tellaeche’s own unique style of colors painted on polyvinyl chloride. The mural was commissioned by the International Labour Organization in an effort to promote the diversity of migration by workers across the border and bring attention to a border culture of workers in a constant state of transition. \nTellaeche was inspired by the struggle of seeing the passion of immigrants and their relentless efforts of succeeding in their quest to support their families and to depict and represent workers from around the world. Highlighting Latin America countries whose intentions are to look up to the north for a better future of possibilities\, he believes all these workers – despite their origins – have the same common mission: to connect arm-in-arm\, touching on human interaction. \nTellaeche lived many years in Tijuana but was born in Mexico City and currently resides there. His work is part of private and public collections around the world and has been exhibited in galleries\, museums\, and universities across Europe\, the United States\, and Mexico. \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Michael Leaf
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, April 8\n1:30 p.m.\nLeaf Sales\, 2585 Main St.\, Chula Vista \nSpeaking at his family’s scrapyard business Leaf Sales\, sculptor Michael Leaf discusses his process and materials. \nMichael Leaf is a San Diego artist who creates 2D and 3D metal works. The works range from pictorial pieces with a street art inflection to abstract sculptural pieces\, site specific installations and geometric\, masculine furniture. Leaf is a former pro skateboarder and came to art-making after he abruptly tired of the rigors of the sport. Over the course of a 12 year career\, he broke 25 bones and his front teeth. Art-making came upon him as suddenly as his departure from skating. After beginning to study yoga\, he saw a sculpture in a dream and set out to create it. \nHis youth dominated by athletics\, Leaf was not exposed to art\, and never took art courses. That he chose metal as his medium is perhaps not surprising. His family\, after all\, owns Leaf Sales\, the metal yard in Chula Vista where his studio is located. \nLeaf describes his creative process as a “massive cumulative vibration”- imagery comes to him from life\, dreams\, and the astral plane. He prefers new materials to found objects or imagery. He often modifies the patina of the works through less-aggressive means\, including exposure to the salt air of the South Bay. \nRSVP to Irene Abraham at 760.943.1033 and irene.abraham@gmail.com \nSponsored by the Contemporary Arts Committee \nFree CAC members and first-time guests | $10 Museum members | $15 nonmembers
