SUMMARY:Drawing Instruction in the Amazon: Artistic Creative Formation in the Mojos Region
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 16\n10:00 a.m.\nSpeakers: Verónica Muñoz-Nájar\, PhD\, Associate Curator of Art of the Spanish Americas\, the Thoma Foundation\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \nJoin us as Dr. Muñoz-Nájar examines the fascinating intersection of art\, colonialism\, and cultural transformation in 18th-century Amazonia. The presentation explores how Spanish administrator Lázaro de Ribera established drawing schools in the Mojos region as a tool for both “civilizing” Indigenous populations and spurring economic development. \nThe lecture highlights the remarkable work of Indigenous artists including Heugene\, Avirá\, Guayacho\, Guacayane\, Noé\, and Hojeari\, who studied and reinterpreted European masters like Carracci\, Guercino\, and Le Brun. Through their drawings\, these artists created a unique visual language that both emulated European academic traditions and subtly subverted them\, embedding their own cultural perspectives and artistic agency. \nDr. Muñoz-Nájar will demonstrate how these works served as both a bridge and a boundary between colonial authority and Indigenous expression\, revealing how artistic education became a complex space where European aesthetics were simultaneously adopted\, transformed\, and reimagined within the context of Spain’s colonial project in the Americas. \n  \nPlease note\, this lecture is in-person only and held at the state-of-the-art MOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater in Balboa Park. \n$10 members and students | $15 seniors and military | $20 nonmembers \nSave my spot!\n  \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which offers a platform for renowned scholars and experts from the art world to share their insights and knowledge on topics related to art history\, art theory\, and\nthe museum’s collections. \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council.

SUMMARY:Coexistence
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, March 21\n10:00 a.m.\nSpeakers: Becky Guttin\, Artist\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \nDon’t miss hearing artist Becky Guttin as she presents a captivating exploration of cultural fusion and artistic innovation. Drawing from her unique perspective as a binational artist\, Guttin masterfully weaves together the threads of two worlds. Her artistic practice\, which includes the meticulous weaving of traditional sacks and integration of organic materials with technological components\, serves as a metaphor for the rich tapestry of borderland life. \n“I want to focus on everything positive about binationality\,” Guttin explains. “Living on the border\, one crosses back and forth\, witnessing profound experiences that go beyond language – manifesting in food\, landscape\, and ultimately\, in my work.” In her work Guttin demonstrates how seemingly contrasting elements – the organic and the mechanical\, the traditional and the modern\, the domestic and the industrial – can coexist in peaceful harmony. Her work stands as a testament to the power of embracing cultural differences and finding beauty in unexpected connections. \nExplore the intersection of art\, culture\, and identity through the eyes of an artist who has dedicated her life to bridging worlds through creativity and understanding. \n  \nPlease note\, this lecture is in-person only and held at the state-of-the-art MOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater in Balboa Park. \n$10 members and students | $15 seniors and military | $20 nonmembers \nSave my spot!\n  \n  \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which offers a platform for renowned scholars and experts from the art world to share their insights and knowledge on topics related to art history\, art theory\, and\nthe museum’s collections. \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council.

SUMMARY:Dynamic Equilibrium: Berenice Abbott’s Documentary of the Invisible
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, March 15\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeakers: Sarah M. Miller\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Art History\, Mills College at Northeastern University\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \nThe San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council is excited to welcome Sarah M. Miller\, Ph.D.\, who will explore how photographer Berenice Abbott’s unique theory of documentary photography was shaped by her experience amidst Europe’s photographic avant-gardes and her collaboration with American art critic Elizabeth McCausland. Abbott put this theory into practice in her WPA-sponsored project Changing New York (1935-39). But when she published the project in book form in 1939\, it was subjected to editorial censorship that made it impossible for readers understand its scope\, creativity\, message\, and political implications. Having recently reconstructed the photographer’s suppressed original manuscript for the book\, Miller will discuss what it reveals not only about Abbott’s sophisticated photography and her analysis of New York’s built environment\, but also about 1930s contests over the very meaning of “documentary.” \n  \nSee works by Berenice Abbott after the lecture in Berenice Abbott: Changing New York\, on view at The San Diego Museum of Art in Gallery 14/15 with entry near the Panama 66 restaurant. \n  \nPlease note\, this lecture is in-person only and held at the state-of-the-art MOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater in Balboa Park. \n$10 members and students | $15 seniors and military | $20 nonmembers \nSave my spot!\n  \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Each subject has their own story\, their own dreams and desires and worries.” \nLocal artist Carlo Miranda (Filipino-American\, b. 1988) showcases ten recent paintings in his intimate exhibition\, Carlo Miranda: In Search of Sonder\, on view at The San Diego Museum of Art through November 19\, 2023. SUMMARY:Dreamscapes: Mohammad Barrangi in Conversation with Dr. Ladan Akbarnia and Roshi Rahnama
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 15\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeakers: Mohammad Barrangi\, Artist; Ladan Akbarnia\, Ph.D.\, Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art\, The San Diego Museum of Art; and Roshi Rahnama\, Founder and Director of ADVOCARTSY\, an Iranian contemporary art platform and gallery\nVirtual Event \n  \nGain new insights in contemporary Iranian art through UK-based Iranian artist Mohammad Barrangi\, whose layered artistic practice combines contemporary printmaking with Iranian illustrated manuscript traditions to explore narratives about personal experience and identity as well as more universal themes. Much of the artist’s repertoire carries an extra layer relating directly to his experience as an immigrant trying to find their way in a diasporic world\, but all of Barrangi’s work is layered with elements added at random in a deliberate manner to create the final collage. The Museum acquired Migration\, its first work by Barrangi\, in 2021 with funds raised by the Museum’s Patrons of the Arts of Iran and the Persian Cultural Center (PCC) of San Diego. \n\nHear the artist in conversation with Ladan Akbarnia\, Ph.D.\, Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art at the Museum\, and Roshi Rahnama\, Founder and Director of ADVOCARTSY\, an Iranian contemporary art platform and gallery. After a brief introduction of the artist and Ms. Rahnama\, Dr. Akbarniawill present questions and topics for discussion with the artist about his work and artistic practice\, including an opportunity to introduce an upcoming live art installation by Barrangi in October.  \n  \n\nSave your spot for the online guest lecture by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \n  \nSave my spot!\n  \nPlan ahead! SUMMARY:Art in the Public Realm
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 17\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker: Gail Goldman\, Public Art Activist and Consultant\nVirtual Event \n  \nArtists working in the public realm can accomplish far more than placing a beautiful artwork on a pedestal or in a plaza. Their work can transform space\, heighten our awareness\, stimulate human interaction\, and help define community. Public art is a reflection of how we see the world—the artist’s response to our time and place combined with our own sense of who we are. This lecture will explore trends in public art over the years including architecturally integrated art\, environmental art\, digital new media\, and interactive art\, among others. \n  \nThis lecture celebrates the legacy of Larry Baza\, whose passion\, commitment\, and advocacy for the arts made San Diego a better place. \n  \nReserve your spot for the online guest lecture by clicking on this link. Boseman College of Fine Arts\, Howard University\nVirtual Event \n  \nThis presentation examines\, through art from ancient Greece to the 20th century\, the phenomenon of racism; and it answers the questions: Has the time-worn antagonism between black and white always existed? SUMMARY:John Raymond Mireles: Destroying Photography
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 17\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker:  John Raymond Mireles\, Photographer \n  \nAn artist with a conceptual bent\, John Raymond Mireles challenges conventional notions of what photography is—both conceptually and in its physical manifestation. In his current exhibition at the Museum\, Disestablishment: John Raymond Mireles\, he presents large-scale photographs of remote and staggeringly beautiful landscapes that have recently had their US National Monument status revoked\, opening the sites for mining and drilling. Then\, he invites the public to take part in destroying the landscape images\, transforming the exhibition into a visceral experience to deepen understanding of the potential damage facing these virgin landscapes. These destructive actions question complicity by mimicking the fate that awaits these areas. \nJoin us online via Zoom on September 17 as we hear from Mireles about his photographic work that crosses genres: it has ranged from portraiture to still life to landscape to street work to documentary projects. \nThen\, consider being part of the destruction by attending the in-person Public Destruction Event on the Museum steps starting at 2:00 p.m. \n  \nReserve your spot for the online guest lecture by clicking on this link. SUMMARY:Painting and Tapestry Now
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 16\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker: John Nava\, painter and tapestry designer \n  \nJoin us for a special guest lecture on the evolution of tapestry design. In 1999 John Nava won a major commission for the new cathedral in Los Angeles. This project led to the development of an innovative process combining traditional oil painting\, computer-derived digital images\, and modern electronic Jacquard weaving technology to make large-scale tapestries. Working closely with weavers in Belgium\, Nava has since produced more public tapestry projects including commissions for USC\, Princeton University\, and the University of San Diego. Additionally\, Nava has also utilized this digital weaving process to make gallery exhibition works addressing social justice issues. \nHear Nava share a survey of his work and his working practice in making tapestries today. \n  \nReserve your spot by clicking on this link. SUMMARY:Italian Renaissance Naturalism: What It Was and Wasn’t
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 15 \n10:00 a.m. PT \nSpeaker: Christian Kleinbub\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Art History at The Ohio State University \n  \nIn histories of Western art\, the Italian Renaissance is often singled out for its use of naturalistic imagery. In this special guest lecture\, Christian Kleinbub\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Art History at The Ohio State University\, shares the history of naturalism in order to shed new light on the term. Although naturalism is often presented as something straightforward\, familiar to us from media like video and photography\, the Italian Renaissance saw the world quite differently than we do now. Using a number of examples\, chosen from both inside and outside the Museum’s collection\, Dr. Kleinbub will lay out what Renaissance naturalism actually consisted of and show why “naturalistic” art looks so different today. \nReserve your spot by clicking on this link.
