DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 20\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeakers: Carlo Miranda\, Artist and Anita Feldman\, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs\, The San Diego Museum of Art\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \n“Sonder” is a term coined by author John Koenig\, meaning “the profound feeling of realizing that everyone\, including strangers passing in the street\, has a life as complex as one’s own\, which they are constantly living despite one’s personal lack of awareness of it. Each subject has their own story\, their own dreams and desires and worries.” \nLocal artist Carlo Miranda (Filipino-American\, b. 1988) showcases ten recent paintings in his intimate exhibition\, Carlo Miranda: In Search of Sonder\, on view at The San Diego Museum of Art through November 19\, 2023. His personal and hyperrealistic portraits\, painted in oil on panel\, depict those closest to him: his family\, his friends\, his barber. \nJoin Miranda and Anita Feldman\, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs\, for an in-person conversation as they discuss Miranda’s life and the inspiration for his exhibition at the Museum. Hear too about Miranda’s process in creating his signature hyperrealistic portraits and how he aims to help viewers develop empathy toward his subjects or even construct imaginary stories of their lives. \n  \nPlease note\, this lecture is in-person only and held at the state-of-the-art MOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater. \n$10 members and students | $15 seniors and military | $20 nonmembers \nSave my spot!\n  \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. SUMMARY:Dreamscapes: Mohammad Barrangi in Conversation with Dr. Ladan Akbarnia and Roshi Rahnama
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 15\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeakers: Mohammad Barrangi\, Artist; Ladan Akbarnia\, Ph.D.\, Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art\, The San Diego Museum of Art; and Roshi Rahnama\, Founder and Director of ADVOCARTSY\, an Iranian contemporary art platform and gallery\nVirtual Event \n  \nGain new insights in contemporary Iranian art through UK-based Iranian artist Mohammad Barrangi\, whose layered artistic practice combines contemporary printmaking with Iranian illustrated manuscript traditions to explore narratives about personal experience and identity as well as more universal themes. Much of the artist’s repertoire carries an extra layer relating directly to his experience as an immigrant trying to find their way in a diasporic world\, but all of Barrangi’s work is layered with elements added at random in a deliberate manner to create the final collage. The Museum acquired Migration\, its first work by Barrangi\, in 2021 with funds raised by the Museum’s Patrons of the Arts of Iran and the Persian Cultural Center (PCC) of San Diego. \n\nHear the artist in conversation with Ladan Akbarnia\, Ph.D.\, Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art at the Museum\, and Roshi Rahnama\, Founder and Director of ADVOCARTSY\, an Iranian contemporary art platform and gallery. After a brief introduction of the artist and Ms. Rahnama\, Dr. Akbarniawill present questions and topics for discussion with the artist about his work and artistic practice\, including an opportunity to introduce an upcoming live art installation by Barrangi in October.  \n  \n\nSave your spot for the online guest lecture by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \n  \nSave my spot!\n  \nPlan ahead! The Docent Council Guest Lecture on October 20 will be available online and in person. \n  \n\n\nDreamscapes: Mohammad Barrangi in Conversation with Dr. Ladan Akbarnia and Roshi Rahnama is presented as a part of the Docent Council Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led virtual tours. \nThis lecture is sponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council and made possible through the cultural partnership with the Farhang Foundation\, a nonprofit organization based in LA dedicated to promoting Iranian arts and culture. \n \n\n  \nFeatured: Mohammad Barrangi\, Migration (detail)\, 2018. SUMMARY:Art in the Public Realm
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 17\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker: Gail Goldman\, Public Art Activist and Consultant\nVirtual Event \n  \nArtists working in the public realm can accomplish far more than placing a beautiful artwork on a pedestal or in a plaza. Their work can transform space\, heighten our awareness\, stimulate human interaction\, and help define community. Public art is a reflection of how we see the world—the artist’s response to our time and place combined with our own sense of who we are. This lecture will explore trends in public art over the years including architecturally integrated art\, environmental art\, digital new media\, and interactive art\, among others. \n  \nThis lecture celebrates the legacy of Larry Baza\, whose passion\, commitment\, and advocacy for the arts made San Diego a better place. \n  \nReserve your spot for the online guest lecture by clicking on this link. SUMMARY:The World Before Racism: An Art Story
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 20\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker:  Lisa Farrington\, Ph.D.\, Director\, Gallery of Art\, Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts\, Howard University\nVirtual Event \n  \nThis presentation examines\, through art from ancient Greece to the 20th century\, the phenomenon of racism; and it answers the questions: Has the time-worn antagonism between black and white always existed? And if not\, who invented it? And when? As “primary sources” (original creations that have not been altered)\, works of art actually have the capacity to answer these questions once and for all and to change the way the world sees race. \n~ Lisa Farrington\, Ph.D. \n  \nReserve your spot for the online guest lecture by clicking on this link. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 15\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker:  Cesáreo Moreno\, Chief Curator and Visual Arts Director\, National Museum of Mexican Art \n  \nThe National Museum of Mexican Art (NMMA) in Chicago has organized a Day of the Dead exhibition each year since its founding. Throughout the course of these 35 unique presentations\, it has developed and expanded all its best practices and strengthened the bond with its community. The museum has built an unparalleled collection of art objects related to the theme\, from pre-Cuauhtémoc artifacts\, to folk art\, to fine art. The knowledge base acquired on this age-old topic is derived from scholarship and annual visits to the far corners of Mexico to investigate how the holiday manifests in different regions\, as well as in the US. \nCesáreo Moreno has been with the NMMA since 1992. He has been the Visual Arts Director since 1995\, and was named the museum’s first full-time Chief Curator in 2004. SUMMARY:John Raymond Mireles: Destroying Photography
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 17\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker:  John Raymond Mireles\, Photographer \n  \nAn artist with a conceptual bent\, John Raymond Mireles challenges conventional notions of what photography is—both conceptually and in its physical manifestation. In his current exhibition at the Museum\, Disestablishment: John Raymond Mireles\, he presents large-scale photographs of remote and staggeringly beautiful landscapes that have recently had their US National Monument status revoked\, opening the sites for mining and drilling. Then\, he invites the public to take part in destroying the landscape images\, transforming the exhibition into a visceral experience to deepen understanding of the potential damage facing these virgin landscapes. These destructive actions question complicity by mimicking the fate that awaits these areas. \nJoin us online via Zoom on September 17 as we hear from Mireles about his photographic work that crosses genres: it has ranged from portraiture to still life to landscape to street work to documentary projects. \nThen\, consider being part of the destruction by attending the in-person Public Destruction Event on the Museum steps starting at 2:00 p.m. \n  \nReserve your spot for the online guest lecture by clicking on this link. SUMMARY:Italian Renaissance Naturalism: What It Was and Wasn’t
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 15 \n10:00 a.m. PT \nSpeaker: Christian Kleinbub\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Art History at The Ohio State University \n  \nIn histories of Western art\, the Italian Renaissance is often singled out for its use of naturalistic imagery. In this special guest lecture\, Christian Kleinbub\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Art History at The Ohio State University\, shares the history of naturalism in order to shed new light on the term. Although naturalism is often presented as something straightforward\, familiar to us from media like video and photography\, the Italian Renaissance saw the world quite differently than we do now. Using a number of examples\, chosen from both inside and outside the Museum’s collection\, Dr. Kleinbub will lay out what Renaissance naturalism actually consisted of and show why “naturalistic” art looks so different today. \nReserve your spot by clicking on this link. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Meher McArthur \nFor centuries\, the Japanese have expressed and codified their love and reverence for nature and the seasons in their poetry and art. From the 7th century AD\, a rich literary and visual vocabulary relating to the four seasons (Japanese: Shiki\, 四季) evolved\, with flowers\, trees\, plants\, birds\, animals\, and entire landscapes representing each season and its associated moods and activities. In this Zoom slide lecture\, Meher McArthur will explore how the tradition of the Four Seasons features in Japanese paintings\, prints\, ceramics\, clothing\, and accessories\, using examples from the Scripps College Collection that will be featured in her upcoming exhibition (Scripps College\, January 2021) of the same name. \n  \nPlease register by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once registration is complete. Space is limited. \n  \nSponsored by the Asian Arts Council.
