Marcy Sculpture Garden \n  \nJoin the SDMA Teen Council and Museum educators for a hands-on art workshop inspired by the designs of Persian ceramics from the Museum’s collection. In this drop-in activity\, participants will create their own painted tiles using paint pens while exploring the geometric and vegetal motifs found in 13th-century Persian pottery. \nThe SDMA Teen Council offers high school students the opportunity to engage collaboratively with Museum staff and peers\, contributing their voices to developing and implementing community-based art programs. \nThis event is open to all ages and skill levels. No reservation is required. All materials are provided. \n  \n Featured: Bowl\, Iran\, 13th century. Ceramic. Museum purchase with funds provided by the Asian Arts Council. Conservation funded by the Association of Iranian American Professionals\, the House of Iran\, and the Persian Cultural Center. 1967.15.

Commemorative butterflies are created in partnership with The Elizabeth Hospice to celebrate and remember someone that you are grieving. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 15\n10:30–11:30 a.m.\nThe San Diego Museum of Art Library  \n  \nJoin us in welcoming a new Storytime rug to the SDMA Library and meet the artist who made it! \nTo bring the essence of nature into the SDMA Library local multimedia artist and author Katie Ruiz has created a Storytime rug inspired by the foliage of the sculpture garden and the rich colors found in the library. Come listen to a reading of her book Brian the Wildflower while enjoying the lush rug.   \nKatie Ruiz is a Chicana multimedia artist working in painting and textile art. She is the creator of The Pompom Project\, a community program that invites participants to make pompoms to contribute to large community art installations. Installations have been created for the City of San Diego\, the Women’s Museum of California\, Oceanside Museum of Art\, Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego\, TedX San Diego\, and more. Ruiz holds a Master of Fine Art from the New York Studio School of Drawing\, Painting and Sculpture and a bachelor’s degree from Northern Arizona University. She is a recipient of the Far South/Border North individual artist grant and the MAC Conner Scholarship.  \nNo pre-registration required.

DESCRIPTION:Thursdays\, September 12\, October 10\, November 14\, and December 12\n11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.\nSDMA May S. Marcy Sculpture Garden\n \n  \nJoin Museum educators in the Museum garden and create a mixed-media artwork inspired by medieval astrolabes.\n Experience awe and wonder through creating an artwork using simple geometry\, pencils\, and tools of precision (a compass and ruler) to design your unique birthdate star marker. The star marker depicts your birthdate and corresponding constellation. \nThis Community Art Workshop is inspired by the astrolabes on view in Wonders of Creation: Art\, Science\, and Innovation in the Islamic World\, a special exhibition on view at The San Diego Museum of Art September 7\, 2024–January 5\, 2025. \nNo reservation required. All materials will be provided. \n  \nGreat for artists of all ages\, Community Art Workshops invite artists to enjoy hands-on art making experiences inspired by the thinking and creating processes of artists on view at the Museum. \n  \nProgramming made possible with support from Nissan Foundation.
