SUMMARY:Coexistence
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, March 21\n10:00 a.m.\nSpeakers: Becky Guttin\, Artist\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \nDon’t miss hearing artist Becky Guttin as she presents a captivating exploration of cultural fusion and artistic innovation. Drawing from her unique perspective as a binational artist\, Guttin masterfully weaves together the threads of two worlds. Her artistic practice\, which includes the meticulous weaving of traditional sacks and integration of organic materials with technological components\, serves as a metaphor for the rich tapestry of borderland life. \n“I want to focus on everything positive about binationality\,” Guttin explains. “Living on the border\, one crosses back and forth\, witnessing profound experiences that go beyond language – manifesting in food\, landscape\, and ultimately\, in my work.” In her work Guttin demonstrates how seemingly contrasting elements – the organic and the mechanical\, the traditional and the modern\, the domestic and the industrial – can coexist in peaceful harmony. Her work stands as a testament to the power of embracing cultural differences and finding beauty in unexpected connections. \nExplore the intersection of art\, culture\, and identity through the eyes of an artist who has dedicated her life to bridging worlds through creativity and understanding. \n  \nPlease note\, this lecture is in-person only and held at the state-of-the-art MOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater in Balboa Park. \n$10 members and students | $15 seniors and military | $20 nonmembers \nSave my spot!\n  \n  \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which offers a platform for renowned scholars and experts from the art world to share their insights and knowledge on topics related to art history\, art theory\, and\nthe museum’s collections. \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council.

SUMMARY:Dynamic Equilibrium: Berenice Abbott’s Documentary of the Invisible
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, March 15\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeakers: Sarah M. Miller\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Art History\, Mills College at Northeastern University\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \nThe San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council is excited to welcome Sarah M. Miller\, Ph.D.\, who will explore how photographer Berenice Abbott’s unique theory of documentary photography was shaped by her experience amidst Europe’s photographic avant-gardes and her collaboration with American art critic Elizabeth McCausland. Abbott put this theory into practice in her WPA-sponsored project Changing New York (1935-39). But when she published the project in book form in 1939\, it was subjected to editorial censorship that made it impossible for readers understand its scope\, creativity\, message\, and political implications. Having recently reconstructed the photographer’s suppressed original manuscript for the book\, Miller will discuss what it reveals not only about Abbott’s sophisticated photography and her analysis of New York’s built environment\, but also about 1930s contests over the very meaning of “documentary.” \n  \nSee works by Berenice Abbott after the lecture in Berenice Abbott: Changing New York\, on view at The San Diego Museum of Art in Gallery 14/15 with entry near the Panama 66 restaurant. \n  \nPlease note\, this lecture is in-person only and held at the state-of-the-art MOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater in Balboa Park. \n$10 members and students | $15 seniors and military | $20 nonmembers \nSave my spot!\n  \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. SUMMARY:James Balog: Photographs from the Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 17\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeakers: James Balog\, Artist\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \nJames Balog: Photographs from the Anthropocene\, on view through March 10\, 2024\, at the Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art (MOPA@SDMA)\, showcases a series of photographs that describes the ancient cyclical patterns of the earth’s life forms and the impact of human activity. For four decades\, James Balog has studied ancient cultural assumptions about the relationship between human nature and the rest of nature. Blending art and science\, Balog’s photographs deliver profound new insights about the environment today. \nThe current epoch of geologic time is known as the “Anthropocene” to reflect the pervasive and enduring traces of human activity left on the Earth. Through innovative imagery\, his projects interpret significant aspects of what has changed\, what’s survived\, and what changes are projected for the future. His photographs reveal nature’s dazzling beauty and its capacity for destruction. \nHis exhibition has been co-organized by the Earth Vision Institute and the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography\, Minneapolis/Paris/Lausanne\, in association with the Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art. \n  \nPlease note\, this lecture is in-person only and held at the state-of-the-art MOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater. \n$10 members and students | $15 seniors and military | $20 nonmembers \nSave my spot!\n  \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. SUMMARY:In Search of Sonder: Inspiring Empathy through Art
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 20\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeakers: Carlo Miranda\, Artist and Anita Feldman\, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs\, The San Diego Museum of Art\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \n“Sonder” is a term coined by author John Koenig\, meaning “the profound feeling of realizing that everyone\, including strangers passing in the street\, has a life as complex as one’s own\, which they are constantly living despite one’s personal lack of awareness of it. Each subject has their own story\, their own dreams and desires and worries.” \nLocal artist Carlo Miranda (Filipino-American\, b. 1988) showcases ten recent paintings in his intimate exhibition\, Carlo Miranda: In Search of Sonder\, on view at The San Diego Museum of Art through November 19\, 2023. His personal and hyperrealistic portraits\, painted in oil on panel\, depict those closest to him: his family\, his friends\, his barber. \nJoin Miranda and Anita Feldman\, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs\, for an in-person conversation as they discuss Miranda’s life and the inspiration for his exhibition at the Museum. Hear too about Miranda’s process in creating his signature hyperrealistic portraits and how he aims to help viewers develop empathy toward his subjects or even construct imaginary stories of their lives. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 15\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeakers: Mohammad Barrangi\, Artist; Ladan Akbarnia\, Ph.D.\, Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art\, The San Diego Museum of Art; and Roshi Rahnama\, Founder and Director of ADVOCARTSY\, an Iranian contemporary art platform and gallery\nVirtual Event \n  \nGain new insights in contemporary Iranian art through UK-based Iranian artist Mohammad Barrangi\, whose layered artistic practice combines contemporary printmaking with Iranian illustrated manuscript traditions to explore narratives about personal experience and identity as well as more universal themes. Much of the artist’s repertoire carries an extra layer relating directly to his experience as an immigrant trying to find their way in a diasporic world\, but all of Barrangi’s work is layered with elements added at random in a deliberate manner to create the final collage. The Museum acquired Migration\, its first work by Barrangi\, in 2021 with funds raised by the Museum’s Patrons of the Arts of Iran and the Persian Cultural Center (PCC) of San Diego. \n\nHear the artist in conversation with Ladan Akbarnia\, Ph.D.\, Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art at the Museum\, and Roshi Rahnama\, Founder and Director of ADVOCARTSY\, an Iranian contemporary art platform and gallery. After a brief introduction of the artist and Ms. Rahnama\, Dr. Akbarniawill present questions and topics for discussion with the artist about his work and artistic practice\, including an opportunity to introduce an upcoming live art installation by Barrangi in October.  \n  \n\nSave your spot for the online guest lecture by clicking on this link. SUMMARY:Art in the Public Realm
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 17\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker: Gail Goldman\, Public Art Activist and Consultant\nVirtual Event \n  \nArtists working in the public realm can accomplish far more than placing a beautiful artwork on a pedestal or in a plaza. Their work can transform space\, heighten our awareness\, stimulate human interaction\, and help define community. Public art is a reflection of how we see the world—the artist’s response to our time and place combined with our own sense of who we are. This lecture will explore trends in public art over the years including architecturally integrated art\, environmental art\, digital new media\, and interactive art\, among others. \n  \nThis lecture celebrates the legacy of Larry Baza\, whose passion\, commitment\, and advocacy for the arts made San Diego a better place. \n  \nReserve your spot for the online guest lecture by clicking on this link. SUMMARY:The World Before Racism: An Art Story
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 20\n10:00 a.m. PT\nSpeaker:  Lisa Farrington\, Ph.D.\, Director\, Gallery of Art\, Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts\, Howard University\nVirtual Event \n  \nThis presentation examines\, through art from ancient Greece to the 20th century\, the phenomenon of racism; and it answers the questions: Has the time-worn antagonism between black and white always existed? And if not\, who invented it? And when? As “primary sources” (original creations that have not been altered)\, works of art actually have the capacity to answer these questions once and for all and to change the way the world sees race. \n~ Lisa Farrington\, Ph.D. \n  \nReserve your spot for the online guest lecture by clicking on this link. SUMMARY:Art and the Environment: An Artist Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, May 3\n10:00 a.m.–noon\nVirtual Friends Lecture and Docent Guest Lecture\nSpeakers: Fernando Casasempere\, ceramic artist; Anya Gallaccio\, artist and professor\, Department of Visual Arts at the University of California\, San Diego; Rebeca Méndez\, artist\, designer\, and Chair of the UCLA Design Media Arts department; and John Mireles\, photographic artist\nModerator: MacKenzie Elmer\, environment reporter for Voice of San Diego \n  \nEach artist will share how their artistic practice and work speaks to issues around land\, the environment\, climate change\, and waste. \nUnified in their innovative and exploratory use of materials and subjects\, artists Fernando Casasempere\, Anya Gallaccio\, Rebeca Méndez\, and John Mireles will gather to discuss their individual practices creating works that invite us to explore our relationship with nature and the earth. While employing different media\, these artists reveal the powerful human presence and influence that remains in the objects\, landscapes\, and environments we inhabit. The conversation will be moderated by Voice of San Diego’s Environment Reporter\, MacKenzie Elmer. \n  \nFree for SDMA docents and members at the Friend level and above | $5 suggested donation for all others \nReserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once registration is complete. \nReserve My Spot \n  \nArtist Panelists: \nFernando Casasempere’s ceramic forms are often inspired by the effects of machines and mass production on the environment and modern society\, including a monumental field of ceramic and steel flowers in the courtyard of Somerset House\, called Out of Sync\, which has now been installed in the Atacama Desert of his native Chile. Casasempere’s ceramics are produced using waste from mining and drilling to create vibrant colors and\, as in pre-Columbian art\, his works are unglazed. He currently lives and works in London\, having brought twelve tons of his own clay mixtures from Chile with him. An exhibition of his work\, titled TERRA: Fernando Casasempere will be on view beginning April 29\, 2022\, at The San Diego Museum of Art. \nAnya Gallaccio creates site-specific\, minimalist installations and often works with organic material such as flowers\, fruit\, plants\, sand\, stones\, and ice. Gallaccio’s practice engages us with the dualities of nature and transience versus the fixed and creates a tension between what we believe is beautiful and benign\, and its far more complex existence. Her natural material choice results in real-time processes of transformation and decay\, exploring ideas around memory and the presence of something that is no longer there. Gallaccio was born in Paisley\, Scotland\, and she is a professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of California\, San Diego. \nRebeca Méndez works with various resources and technologies to invoke new balances between the artificial and the natural\, between humans and nature. Méndez is an artist\, designer\, and Chair of the UCLA Design Media Arts department\, where she is director of the CounterForce Lab\, a research and fieldwork studio dedicated to using art and design to develop creative collaborations\, research\, and projects around the social and ecological impacts of climate change. Méndez’s interests and initiatives are a bridge between art\, design\, and science\, and demonstrate a commitment to a sustainable future. \nJohn Mireles works in the medium of photography\, often inviting the public to participate in additional meaning-making through the hands-on destruction of his artwork. In 2019 he traveled to photograph areas in the United States that had previously been protected but were since opened to drilling and mining\, and exhibited these photographs at The San Diego Museum of Art in 2021 as Disestablishment: John Raymond Mireles. In order to create a visceral understanding of the potential for damage that awaits these environments\, after one month of exhibition\, members of the public were then invited to hammer on\, cut away\, stomp on\, tear\, and mark up the prints. After the works had been damaged\, they were reconstructed and re-hung for continued exhibition. These images and actions pose the question\, “If we are hesitant to damage these prints\, why are we okay with allowing the actual environment to be destroyed by commercial exploitation?” \n  \nModerator: \nMacKenzie Elmer is an environment and energy reporter at Voice of San Diego\, a non-profit investigative journalism newsroom. She obtained a master’s in climate science and policy at Scripps Institution of Oceanography\, where she explored the impact of lithium extraction on indigenous Chilean communities driven by market and political demand for renewable energy in California. She began her journalism career in Iowa after completing a journalism and Spanish bachelors at University of Iowa and covered everything from politics to crime at newsrooms like The Des Moines Register and the Associated Press. \n
