SUMMARY:Italian Renaissance Naturalism: What It Was and Wasn’t
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 15 \n10:00 a.m. PT \nSpeaker: Christian Kleinbub\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Art History at The Ohio State University \n  \nIn histories of Western art\, the Italian Renaissance is often singled out for its use of naturalistic imagery. In this special guest lecture\, Christian Kleinbub\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Art History at The Ohio State University\, shares the history of naturalism in order to shed new light on the term. Although naturalism is often presented as something straightforward\, familiar to us from media like video and photography\, the Italian Renaissance saw the world quite differently than we do now. Using a number of examples\, chosen from both inside and outside the Museum’s collection\, Dr. Kleinbub will lay out what Renaissance naturalism actually consisted of and show why “naturalistic” art looks so different today. \nReserve your spot by clicking on this link. All participants will be sent the Zoom link and instructions via email once you secure your place. Space is limited. \nReserve my spot! \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led virtual tours. \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council. \n  \n Featured: Bernardino Luini (AKA Bernardino Lovino; Bernardino del Lupino). SUMMARY:Guest Lecture Series: Artists in Love
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 17\n10:00 a.m. \nDiane Arkin\, Former Senior Lecturer\, National Gallery of Art\, Washington\, presents on the subject of artists in love. \nRomantic influences flourished among artist couples throughout the 20th century and played a fascinating role in furthering new modes of expression. Whether partnering briefly or for extended periods of time\, famous overt and covert lovers exchanged ideas and imagery that triggered some of the most important avant-garde art of the modern era. Join us as we examine the connections between such artist pairs as Pablo Picasso and Fernande Olivier\, Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O’Keeffe\, Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock\, and Christo and Jeanne-Claude who drew inspiration from one another\, and whose art took paths unimaginable without the impact of their companions. \nFor fifteen years when V.I.P’s\, dignitaries\, superstars\, and celebrities came to the National Gallery of Art\, Diane Arkin was the Senior Lecturer and scholar routinely called on to provide engaging\, entertaining\, and thought provoking lectures on subjects spanning treasures from the middle ages through the most challenging art of today. Diane continues to lecture nationally and internationally on museum education\, trends in theory and practice\, active learning strategies\, museums as unique learning environments\, and a broad range of art historical topics. Prior to coming to the National Gallery of Art\, Diane served as Curator of Education at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and College of Art and Design in Washington\, DC\, and as Director of Education at The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. Diane’s work as a Program Coordinator in both the Resident Associate Program and the International Study Tours division of the Smithsonian Institution included years of lecturing both domestically and internationally. Before entering the museum field Diane had an active career as an academic\, serving as Assistant Professor of Art History at George Mason University and at The University of Colorado\, and also teaching extensively throughout the Washington\, D.C. area. \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led tours at 11:30 a.m. \n$13 members | $16 nonmembers | $8 seniors and military | Free for students (with ID\, available on-site at the event only) \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council \nFeatured: Christo and Jeanne-Claude\, Running Fence\, 1976\, Mixed media\, 1998.99.a-b\, Museum purchase.

SUMMARY:Guest Lecture Series: Finding the Traditional in the Contemporary
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 15\n10:00 a.m. \n“Making art with rocks is something humans have been doing throughout history\, across all cultures. The conversations discovered\, interpreted then re-interpreted by different generations\, exist because stone holds the direct marks of artists eternally. How to acknowledge and respect the work of earlier artists and find a unique voice for myself inside this material\, marble? This is the enormous challenge\, as a contemporary artist.” – Elizabeth Turk \nElizabeth Turk is an American artist and sculptor known for marble sculpture and community installations. Turk’s marble work searches the boundaries of paradox: the contemporary in the traditional\, the lightness in weight\, the emptiness in mass\, the fluidity of the solid\, extended time in a moment. Her intricately carved sculptures defy gravity and make possible that which seems impossible. Inspired by the natural world\, she references its myriad of elegant organic structures\, yet her work is not complete until abandoned to larger environments. Turk is a MacArthur Fellow\, an Annalee & Barnett Newman Foundation recipient\, and a Smithsonian Artist Fellow\, among other awards. Turk received her MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art\, Rinehart School of Sculpture in 1994\, her BA from Scripps College\, Claremont\, CA in 1983. In 2017 she launched ET Studios (a CA non-profit) to develop open community experiences. \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture Series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led tours at 11:30 a.m. \n$13 members | $16 nonmembers | $8 seniors and military | Free for students (with ID\, available on-site at the event only) \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council \nFeatured: Elizabeth Turk\, Collar #7 and Huntington Pier\, Courtesy of the artist.

SUMMARY:Guest Lecture & Tour Series: Hard Bodies: Contemporary Japanese Lacquer Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 19\n10:00 a.m.\nJames S. Copley Auditorium \nAndreas Marks\, Ph.D.\, Head of Japanese Art and Korean Art at the Minneapolis Institute of Art\, will speak on the subject of contemporary Japanese lacquer sculptures. \nSince the Neolithic era\, artisans in East Asia have coated bowls\, cups\, boxes\, baskets\, and other utilitarian objects with a natural polymer distilled from the sap of the rhus verniciflua\, known as the lacquer tree. Lacquerware was – and still is – prized for its sheen\, a lustrous beauty that artists learned to accentuate over the centuries with inlaid gold\, silver\, mother-of-pearl\, and other precious materials. \nSince the late 1980s\, this tradition has been challenged. A small but enterprising circle of lacquer artists have pushed the medium in entirely new and dynamic directions by creating large-scale sculptures\, works that are both conceptually innovative and superbly exploitive of lacquer’s natural virtues. To create these forms and shapes\, contemporary lacquer artists bend tradition to their needs. Kofushiwaki Tsukasa’s Fallen Moon I is four meters (13 feet) long\, a scale enabled by the kanshitsu technique\, developed in China during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 AD)\, in which a base of lacquer-saturated hemp fiber is created with a mold. Many artists have gravitated to polystyrene\, a lightweight\, flexible\, yet immutable material\, such as Aoki Chie’s Body 09-1. For The Dual Sun\, Kurimoto Natsuki used an even more modern base: an automobile hood. \nDr. Andreas Marks is the Head of the Japanese and Korean Art Department at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. From 2008 to 2013 he was the Director and Chief Curator of the Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture in California. He has a Ph.D. from Leiden University in the Netherlands and a master’s degree in East Asian Art History from the University of Bonn. A specialist of Japanese woodblock prints\, he is the author of 14 books. His “Publishers of Japanese Prints: A Compendium\,” is the first comprehensive reference work in any language on Japanese print publishers. In 2014 he received an award from the International Ukiyo‐e Society in Japan for his research. He has curated exhibitions in a variety of media from pre‐modern to contemporary art and visual culture at 25 museums including the Birmingham Museum of Art\, Detroit Institute of Arts\, Honolulu Museum of Art\, San Antonio Museum of Art\, and the San Diego Museum of Art. The Minneapolis Institute of Art just showed his exhibition “Love Affairs: The Tale of Genji in Japanese Art” and another one of his exhibitions\, “Hard Bodies: Contemporary Japanese Lacquer Sculpture\,” just closed at the Morikami Museum in Delray Beach\, Florida\, on March 31st. His new coffeetable book on masterpieces of Japanese woodblock prints will be published in autumn by Taschen. \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture & Tour series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led tours. \n$13 members | $16 nonmembers | $8 seniors and military | $5 students \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council \nFeatured: Aoki Chie\, born 1981. SUMMARY:Guest Lecture & Tour Series: The Road from Giorgione and Caravaggio to the Greatness of Spanish Painting
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, February 15\n10:00 a.m.\nJames S. Copley Auditorium \nBeginning from the fine Giorgione portrait in the Museum’s collection\, British art historian\, Nigel McGilchrist\, traces the path which leads from the extraordinary innovations of Giorgione and Titian in Venice – and later of Caravaggio (whose work both Velázquez and Goya saw when they visited Rome) – into the heart of Spanish painting in its Golden Age: El Greco\, Zurbarán\, Sánchez Cotán\, and the greatest Spanish masters.  This is a fascinating story of journeys\, influences\, illnesses\, challenges and emulation: it results in some of the most individualistic works in the history of art. \nArt-historian Nigel McGilchrist was a scholar at Winchester College and at Oxford\, and has lived in the Mediterranean area – Greece\, Turkey and Italy – for almost forty years\, working initially for the Italian Ministry of Arts in the field of wall-painting conservation.  He taught at Rome University\, for the University of Massachusetts\, and was formerly Dean of European Studies for a consortium of American Universities.  He lectures widely in art and architectural history at museums and institutions in Europe and the USA\, and has written a detailed survey of the art and architecture of the Aegean world in twenty volumes (McGilchrist’s Greek Islands).  This is the eleventh time in almost twenty-five years that he has spoken at the San Diego Museum of Art.  His home is now on the Greek island of Kythera. \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture & Tour series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led tours. \n$13 members | $16 nonmembers | $8 seniors and military | $5 students \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council \nFeatured: Giorgione (Giorgio de Castelfranco)\, Portrait of a Man (‘Terris Portrait’)\, 1506. SUMMARY:Guest Lecture & Tour Series: Meddling with the Sex of Angels
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 18\n10:00 a.m.\nJames S. Copley Auditorium \nCristina Della Coletta\, Ph.D.\, Dean of the Division of Arts & Humanities at the University of California\, San Diego will share her research on the 1911 expo in Turin\, covered in her book World’s Fairs Italian Style\, the Great Expositions in Turin and Their Narratives\, 1860-1915 (2006). \nAccording to conventional wisdom\, Italy was not an influential participant in the nationalistic and imperialistic discourses that world’s fairs produced in countries such as Great Britain\, France\, and the United States. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, however\, Italy hosted numerous national and international exhibitions expounding notions of national identity\, imperial expansion\, technological progress\, and capitalist growth. \nWorld’s Fairs Italian-Style explores world’s fairs in Italy at the turn of the twentieth century in comparison to their more famous counterparts in France\, England\, and the United States. Cristina Della Coletta demonstrates that\, because of its social fragmentation and hybrid history\, Italy was a site of both hegemony and subordination – an aspiring imperial power whose colonization started from within. She focuses on two best-selling authors\, Emilio Salgari and Guido Gozzano\, and illustrates how these authors interpreted their age’s ‘exposition mentality.’ Salgari and Gozzano’s exposition narratives\, Della Coletta argues\, reveal Italy’s uncertainties about own sense of national identity\, and its belated commitment to Western imperialism. \nOf interest to students and scholars of literature\, cultural history\, and Italian\, World’s Fairs Italian-Style provides a fascinating glimpse into a hitherto unexplored area of study\, and brings to light a cultural phenomenon that played a significant role in shaping Italy’s national identity. \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture & Tour series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led tours. \n$13 members | $16 nonmembers | $8 seniors and military | $5 students \nSponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council

SUMMARY:Guest Lecture & Tour Series: Fake or Forgery / A Short History of Art Fraud
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 19\n10:00 a.m.\nJames S. Copley Auditorium \nSpeaker: John Myatt\, Reformed art forger\, artist\, and lecturer \nJohn Myatt was the artist involved in what Scotland Yard described as the greatest art fraud of the twentieth century. In 1975 when he was a supply teacher John’s wife left him and he had to give up teaching to look after two small children aged 3 and 1 1/2. Having once painted a Dufy for fun he put an advert in Private Eye magazine for Genuine Fakes from £120. One man kept on coming back for more paintings and nearly two years later John found out he had sold a Small French cubist painting for £25.000. John was offered either half of that in a brown envelope….. or his normal fee…… \nThe rest is history…….. \nHaving served a prison sentence\, much against his better judgement! John was persuaded to paint again. This talk will be illustrated with examples of John’s work legally undertaken over the last two decades. \n\nThis lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture & Tour series\, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. SUMMARY:The Intersection of Past and Present in Iranian Art: Behind the Scenes of an Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecture and Tour Series\n\nChange of Program  \nNote: Due to a scheduling conflict\, our originally scheduled speaker Dr. Sabiha Al Khemir will be unable to appear.  We are fortunate that Dr. Linda Komaroff has agreed to speak instead. \n\n\nSpeaker:  Linda Komaroff\, Ph.D\, Curator and Department Head\, Art of the Middle East\, Los Angeles County Museum of Art \nLinda Komaroff has served as LACMA’s curator of Islamic art since 1995. Her past exhibitions at LACMA include The Legacy of Genghis Khan: Courtly Art and Culture in Western Asia\, 1256–1353 (2003); A Tale of Two Persian Carpets (2009); and Gifts of the Sultan: The Arts of Giving at the Islamic Courts (2011). The latter was the first major exhibition on Islamic art organized by an American institution to travel to the Middle East\, to the Museum of Islamic Art\, Doha (2012)\, where she was the guest curator. Her exhibition of highlights from LACMA’s permanent collection of Islamic art recently opened at the new King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Dhahran\, Saudi Arabia. Among her contemporary exhibitions are: Islamic Art Now: Contemporary Art of the Middle East\, Part 1 (2015) and Part 2 (2016). Combining historical and contemporary art\, her current exhibition for LACMA\, In the Fields of Empty Days: The Intersection of Past and Present in Iranian Art\, will open May 6\, 2018. \nShe is the author or editor of several books and exhibition catalogues\, and has written numerous articles and book chapters on various aspects of Islamic art with a special focus on Iran. She is the recipient of a number of grants for scholarly research\, including two Fulbright fellowships\, and Metropolitan Museum of Art and Getty fellowships\, while the Legacy of Genghis Khan exhibition catalogue received the Alfred H. Barr\, Jr. Award from the College Art Association and Gifts of the Sultan received the Annual Publication Prize for Outstanding Exhibition Catalogue from the Association of Art Museum Curators and the Twentieth World Prize for the Book of the Year of the Islamic Republic of Iran. She has taught at Hamilton College\, New York University\, and UCLA. She was closely involved with LACMA’s acquisition of the Madina Collection of Islamic Art in 2002\, which\, in combination with the museum’s existing collection of Islamic art\, gives Los Angeles one of the most significant collections worldwide; in 2006 she began to acquire and exhibit contemporary art of the Middle East\, placing LACMA’s collection at the forefront of American museums. \n\nIn the Fields of Empty Days: The Intersection of Past and Present in Iranian Art (May 6–September 9\, 2018) \nLACMA’s In the Fields of Empty Days is a groundbreaking exhibition of both historical and contemporary Iranian works that highlight ways in which artists have used and continue to use the past as a metaphor for the present day. This notion is revealed in art and literature in which ancient kings and heroes are used in later contexts as examples of virtue or as objects of derision\, while long-gone Shi‘ite saints are evoked as champions of the poor and the oppressed. This lecture will go behind the scenes to look at the concepts that shaped the exhibition; it will also consider how the exhibition may transform existing ideas about Iranian art. \nRead more about her exhibition here \n\n\n\nSee the full list of speakers for the 2017-18 Guest Lecture and Tour Series. \nThis lecture series focuses on works of art on view in the Museum and topics of interest in the broader art world. SUMMARY:Real Life\, Ideal Life: Thomas Eakins\, Eastman Johnson\, and George Inness in the 1870s and 1880s
DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecture and Tour Series\n\nSpeaker: Robert L. Pincus\, Ph.D.\, Visiting Professor of Art History\, University of San Diego \nRobert Pincus will discuss the recurrent streak of idealism in 19th century American painting\, even when social forces might have led artists not to depict life in the uplifting manner they generally did. This view is clearly embodied in the paintings of major artists such as Eastman Johnson\, George Inness and Thomas Eakins. Johnson extolled the virtues of domesticity and community in such works as Woman Reading (circa 1874) and The Cranberry Harvest\, Island of Nantucket (1880) and Inness evoked the spirituality of the American landscape in Farm Landscape: Cattle in Pasture – Sunset Nantucket (circa 1883). Eakins paid homage to domestic life\, too\, in Elizabeth with a Dog (circa 1871)\, but moved American art toward realism – and a diminished sense of idealism – foreshadowing developments in 20th century American art. Pincus will look at these and other works by the three painters\, pointing to examples in the literature of the era as well. \nSee the full list of speakers for the 2017-18 Guest Lecture and Tour Series. \nThis lecture series focuses on works of art on view in the Museum and topics of interest in the broader art world. SUMMARY:West Meets East: Peter Hurd\, Andrew Wyeth\, and the Mysterious Power of the Figure
DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecture and Tour Series\n\nAndrew J. Walker will speak on the celebrity of the painting Eve of Saint John by Peter Hurd\, which is at once a portrait and a landscape. Walker examines both how and why Hurd chose the subject and how\, as an artist removed from the New York art scene\, he was able to extend his influence to reinforce the importance of realistic figure painting. \nAndrew J. Walker\, PhD\, has served as Executive Director of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art since 2011. His previous work experience includes the Assistant Director for Curatorial Affairs and Curator of American Art at the Saint Louis Art museum. He has held curatorial positions at the Missouri History Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago\, and he received his doctorate in Art History from the University of Pennsylvania. \nDuring his now seven year tenure at the Amon Carter\, Andrew has effectively led major changes in both the internal and external operations of the museum.  This has included directing a new collections plan that embraces in a sustainable way the creative work of living artists\, the development of world class exhibitions\, the expansion of the museum to an international platform\, and the re-conceptualization of the museum as a critical site for experiences across the broad spectrum of the guests who visit.  The vision for the museum in this time and this environment captures the work: the Amon Carter Museum is the place to experience the wonder of American Art. \n\nSee the full list of speakers for the 2017-18 Guest Lecture and Tour Series. \nThis lecture series focuses on works of art on view in the Museum and topics of interest in the broader art world.
