In this lecture\, Fernando Botero Zea\, eldest son of the late artist\, will provide an intimate account of his father’s presence and influence in the history of art\, as well as invite the audience to understand how the reality of Latin American life deeply rooted his work while simultaneously helping it to become a benchmark in contemporary art. \nFernando Botero Zea is a Colombian-Mexican businessman who works with his two siblings\, Lina and Juan Carlos\, to manage the estate of their late father\, Maestro Fernando Botero. Bean\, Chair\, Center for Art and Archaeology\, American Institute of Indian Studies\nVirtual Event \n  \nAir-dried clay (a.k.a. terracruda)\, along with stone\, metal\, wood\, and fired clay\, stands among southern Asia’s oldest and most widely used mediums for sculpture. Typically finished in vivid color\, the medium has been largely overlooked in studies of the region’s arts\, often misidentified as stucco and terracotta\, or sidelined as too breakable and exuberantly colored to be ‘art.’ This excursion brings together some of the most prominent practices across the region to consider why painted air-dried clay has been so valued as medium for figural sculpture\, and what its sidelining reveals about the study of visual culture. \n  \nPlease reserve your spot by clicking on this link. The Korean Art Society has over 3\,000 members worldwide and was the first organization outside of Korea to publish a periodical on Korean art\, the Korean Art Society Journal. This lecture will tell the story of the 2008 founding of the Korean Art Society and share the organization’s mission. See colorful slides illustrating Korean Art Society events and media coverage\, including front-page newspaper articles on Korean art discoveries. \nThe virtual event is presented alongside Korea in Color: A Legacy of Auspicious Images on view at The San Diego Museum of Art through Sunday\, March 3\, 2024. \n  \nSpeaker Biography \nRobert Turley is owner of Korean Art and Antiques Gallery and also president of the Korean Art Society. He is internationally recognized as one of the foremost experts and authors on Korean art and antiques. He is recipient of the Global Korea Award\, awarded by the Council on Korean Studies at Michigan State University.
