Conceived as part of the Museum’s Centennial\, Local Visions grew out of an open call that invited local artists to reimagine the Museum’s landmark exterior through their own contemporary perspectives. The response to the call was remarkable\, with an inspiring range of proposals that demonstrated the depth of talent in our community. From these submissions\, a selection of works was chosen to reflect both the diversity of artistic approaches and the shared sense of connection to this historic building. \nTogether\, these works illuminate how a single façade can serve as both subject and symbol; honored\, transformed\, and reinterpreted in ways that bridge community and architecture\, past and present\, tradition and innovation. \nMany thanks to the artists whose work appears in the exhibition. \n  \nFeatured at top right: Wagner Humphreys\, Timeless (detail)\, 2025. SUMMARY:Gallery Collective Film Night: John Huston’s Moulin Rouge (1952)
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, June 25\n7:00 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.)\nMOPA@SDMA Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater \n  \nGallery Collective members and above are invited to a special screening of the 1952 classic film Moulin Rouge\, in celebration of SDMA’s featured exhibition\, Cafés and Cabarets: The Spectacular Art of Toulouse-Lautrec. This classic film depicts the life and times of the artist and his turbulent experience in the Paris art world. \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. in the MOPA@SDMA Atrium for movie snacks and a photo booth\, then join us in the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater for the film starting at 7:00 p.m. \nGallery Collective level members and above may reserve two complimentary tickets using the link below. Space is limited. \nGet Tickets \nNot a Gallery Collective member? Join or upgrade today by calling 619.696.1941 to secure your seats for this event. \n  \n\n  \nAbout the Exhibition \nKnown for his beguiling portraits of Paris nightlife and the unvarnished local characters of Montmartre\, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born into an aristocratic family in the South of France in 1864. Growing up as a child with a disability that caused his legs to stop developing\, Toulouse-Lautrec turned to drawing rather than the sports his family pursued. His short but celebrated career immortalized the cabaret culture of Belle Époque Paris and revolutionized the art of the poster. Working in the popular and modern art form of the color lithograph\, Toulouse-Lautrec reached unprecedented audiences with spellbinding visuals and eye-catching colors. Inspired and encouraged by Impressionists such as Edgar Degas and his close friend Vincent van Gogh\, and taking influence from the flattened color patterns of Japanese graphic arts\, Toulouse-Lautrec left an unforgettable image of the spectacle\, people\, and performers of turn-of-the-century Paris. Cafés and Cabarets: The Spectacular Art of Toulouse-Lautrec is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to see original works from this celebrated artist. \n

SUMMARY:Members’ Preview: O'Keeffe and Moore
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 12\n10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. \n  \nMembers get early access! Be among the first to see this one-of-a-kind exhibition.\nMembers are invited for a first look at this groundbreaking exhibition of two icons of Modernism\, Georgia O’Keeffe and Henry Moore. Over 100 paintings and sculptures trace their artistic development\, exploring their investigations of bones\, stones\, internal/external forms of flowers and seashells\, and landscape\, as well as Surrealist concepts such as the pairing of objects and metamorphosis. This exhibition unites the work of these artists for the first time\, and re-creates their studios in the Museum with their original contents of found objects\, tools\, and furnishings. Visitors will be able to explore their working practices\, and see how these humble objects inspired some of their most important artistic creations. \nO’Keeffe and Moore is on view at The San Diego Museum of Art from May 13 through August 27\, 2023\, and will then travel to the Albuquerque Museum and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
