SUMMARY:Art of Élan: Fateful Encounters
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 12\n7:00 p.m.\nMuseum (Mr. & Mrs. Walter Fitch Jr. Memorial Gallery) \nThis colorful concert thematically explores the various people and circumstances life presents\, with music by Baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann and famed film composer Nino Rota\, as well as evocative works by today’s most innovative young composers Shawn Conley and Sarah Kirkland Snider\, whose vocal piece “Psalm of the Soil” was featured on the season finale concert at the museum this past May. \nThis concert is inspired by Jusepe de Ribera’s work\, Susanna and the Elders\, as part of the exhibition Art & Empire: The Golden Age of Spain\, on view May 18\, 2019 through September 2\, 2019. \n$40 member | $45 student\, senior\, military | $50 general admission \n\nThis is a part of Art of Élan’s 12th season concert series called Ways of Listening. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 30\n7:30 p.m. Talk\n8:00 p.m. Concert\nJames S. Copley Auditorium \nJoin San Diego jazz icon Gilbert Castellanos and featured guest Sarah McKenzie at Portraits In Jazz! The Australian-born\, Paris-based jazz pianist and singer is poised to join the rarefied air occupied by superstars ‪Diana Krall and ‪Norah Jones. She’ll perform a rich collection of originals\, as well as jazz standards from the likes of George Gershwin\, Jerome Kern\, Johnny Mercer and Michel Legrand\, backed by a top shelf band including Castellanos himself. \nAt 7:30 p.m. a pre-concert talk about some of the most legendary pianists in jazz will be given by James Romeo*\, professor of music at San Diego Mesa College where he directs the award-winning Concert Jazz Band and the Kearny Mesa Concert Band.
