SUMMARY:Mehregan Fall Fête
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 7\n4:00 p.m.\nJames S. Copley Auditorium \n  \n\nJoin us for a stimulating evening celebrating the Iranian festival of Mehregan. Celebration attendees are invited to an outdoor viewing of a newly commissioned piece by Mohammad Barrangi beginning at 4:00 p.m. before being seated in the Museum’s James S. Copley Auditorium for the annual Mehregan concert at 5:00 p.m. Hear the importance of the Arts of Iran at the Museum\, the Persian Cultural Center partnership\, and the Patrons of the Arts of Iran from Roxana Velásquez\, the Museum’s Maruja Baldwin Executive Director and CEO\, and Museum Trustee Gita Khadiri. The concert\, titled “Voices Unveiled\,” will then feature music composed by Ehsan Matoori\, with vocals by Mina Deris and Maliheh Moradi and supported by musicians Aidin Ahmadinejad\, Mehrpouya Daneshvar\, Daniele De Cario\, Connor Kent\, and Hailey Waterman. \n“Voices Unveiled” invites audiences to listen to and feel the stories of two Iranian women as they experience oppression and seek freedom and justice. Told in three parts\, the program first features vocalist Maliheh Moradi performing in Farsi in the Iranian classical style\, followed by Mina Deris performing in Arabic and Farsi in the folk style\, concluding with both vocalists performing a fusion in Farsi and Arabic. \nEvent sponsors also have the opportunity at 4:00 p.m. to tour the Arts of Iran gallery with Ladan Akbarnia\, Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art at the Museum. \nPresented by the Persian Cultural Center\, the Mehregan Fall Fête is an annual fundraising event benefiting the Arts of Iran at The San Diego Museum of Art. This event supports the acquisition of works of art either made in Iran and the Persianate world or created by Iranian contemporary artists. The Arts of Iran exists and thrives because of the dedication and generosity of this community. \n  \nMehregan Fall Fête tickets are on sale now. \nCapacity is limited and tickets (including a full range of sponsor benefits) begin at $65. For tickets\, visit the Persian Cultural Center ticketing website. \n  \n  \n\nArts of Iran\nFeaturing highlights from the Museum’s permanent collection of works from Iran and the Persianate world dating after the advent of Islam in the 7th century\, as well as loans of contemporary works by Iranian and Iranian-American artists\, this gallery celebrates Iranian civilization\, heritage\, and visual culture within a global context. \nHISTORY OF PERSIAN ART COLLECTION AND ITS GALLERY\nThe San Diego Museum of Art’s collection of the Arts of Iran comprises nearly 200 works produced from the 9th century to the present day. Built from around the 1950s to 1960s through gifts as well as Museum purchases with funding from individuals and The Asiatic Arts Committees of the Fine Arts Society—today’s Asian and South Asian Arts Councils—the collection has seen an increase in growth and support in recent years\, with an acquisition strategy now expanding to include modern and contemporary art from Iran and the Iranian diaspora. Selections from the Arts of Iran collection are regularly on view in the Museum’s Arts of Iran gallery and often also feature in special displays in other parts of the Museum. \n  \nThis event is sponsored by the Persian Cultural Center. \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nFeatured at top right: Pouran Jinchi\, Untitled 13 (Rubaiyat series) (detail)\, 1996. Ink and acrylic on canvas. Museum purchase with funds provided by Sarah E. Aghassi\, Nasrin Owsia & Behrooz Akbarnia\, Gita Khadiri & Fred Khoroushi\, Farnaz & Kourosh Mehrayin\, Eugene “Mitch” Mitchell\, and Mahsa Vahidi & Arman Paymai in honor of Ms. Shahri Estakhry\, 2022.31.

SUMMARY:Art Museum Day
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 17\n10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. \nThe Museum will be open with FREE general admission from 10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. on Friday\, May 17 for Art Museum Day. \n\nFor the 10th anniversary year of Art Museum Day\, The San Diego Museum of Art will join the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) and hundreds of institutions across North America in offering great opportunities for our audiences. This year\, the Museum will offer free general admission to recognize the arts and the important role that art museums play in their communities. The Museum also invites visitors to share their Art Museum Day experiences via social media\, with the hashtag #ArtMuseumDay. \nAAMD’s Art Museum Day is an opportunity to focus attention on the role of art museums in North America. The initiative is an extension of the International Council of Museums’s (ICOM) International Museum Day\, a global program embracing all different types of museums. Last year\, the San Diego Museum of Art—along with more than 150 other AAMD member museums of varying sizes across the United States\, Canada\, and Mexico—participated in Art Museum Day. \nA comprehensive list of participating AAMD member art museums will be available on the AAMD website. Note that while AAMD’s Art Museum Day and ICOM’s International Museum Day are formally held each year on May 18\, some institutions\, like the San Diego Museum of Art\, shift their events to adjacent dates.

SUMMARY:Mehregan Fall Fête: Persian Mehregan Festival with Mohsen Namjoo
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 13\n7:00 p.m. \nPresented by the Persian Cultural Center\, an annual fundraising event for the benefit of Arts of Iran at The San Diego Museum of Art. \nMohsen Namjoo will perform along with his full band including drums\, bass\, and guitar. \nVIP tickets include a meet & greet session with the artist and access to Arts of Iran and the exhibitions on the Museum’s first floor at 6:00 p.m. in the Museum’s Rotunda. \nPersian Cultural Center (PCC) & SDMA members\, please use discount code NAMJOO5 for general and premium admissions. \n  \nArts of Iran\nUnder the leadership of Executive Director Roxana Velásquez and Anita Feldman\, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs and Education\, a 700-square-foot gallery space was newly designated for the Arts of Iran in 2017. Showcasing some of the best Persian art objects from the Museum’s permanent collection as well as twenty fine loan objects of the pre-Islamic time\, ranging from the Near Eastern (ca. 2500 BC) to the Sasanian era (224–651 AD) from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, this gallery illustrates a brief and yet profound development of Persian civilization and art in history and within today’s global context. \n  \nHistory of Persian Art collection and its gallery\nThe Museum’s collection of Persian art\, dating from the ninth to the twentieth centuries\, consists of close to two hundred items\, including a manuscript of Shahnama (the Epic of Iranian Kings) that was commissioned in India. The Persian art collection was built from around the 1950s to 1960s mainly through gifts as well as Museum purchases with funding from individuals and The Asiatic Arts Committees of the Fine Arts Society\, today’s Asian Arts Council (1959.3.a & 1958.33). Mrs. Irving T. Snyder (Caroline Stambaugh\, 1891–1974)\, one of the earliest and the most important donors of Persian art\, gifted at least fifty-three Asian art objects to the Museum\, including “Sweetmeat dish” (1964.131) and fritwares of the thirteenth century. Both Drs. Edwin Binney 3rd and Catherine Benkaim also gifted some Iranian objects (1971.72) in later decades. The establishment of a new gallery in 2017 provided a dedicated space to honor the Arts of Iran in San Diego\, a result of the collaborative efforts between the Museum’s leadership\, Dr. Marika Sardar\, the former Curator of South Asian and Islamic Art\, and the Persian Cultural Center and its community. The Museum is pleased to continue the collaboration with the Persian Cultural Center this year. \nThis event is sponsored by the Persian Cultural Center. \n\n\n\n\nFeatured: Court scene with dancing and feasting\, Iran\, Isfahan\, ca. 1920\, glazed ceramic. Museum purchase with funds provided by The Asiatic Arts Committee of the Fine Arts Society and Mrs. Irving T. Snyder\, 1958.33.

SUMMARY:Gibson Guitar Online Auction: Last Day
DESCRIPTION:Through a generous donation from the Gibson Foundation\, The San Diego Museum of Art shares for the first time the The Shepherdess Gibson Les Paul. The guitar is named after The Young Shepherdess (1885) by William Adolphe Bouguereau\, a painting which hangs in the Museum’s Upper Rotunda. Infused with the artistic vision of Chor Boogie\, a critically acclaimed spray paint artist\, and the spirit of The San Diego Museum of Art\, this guitar exemplifies what it means to bring fine art and music together. Charged with the vision of the Museum\, this treasure of rock and roll will be auctioned off for the holiday season. Proceeds from the online sale will support the mission of the Museum to “inspire\, educate\, and cultivate curiosity through great works of art.” \nThe auction is now LIVE and ends on 12/18 at 4 p.m!
